converter tripping and saw smoke

i have purchased a 2006 jayco, once i pluged in power, converter breaker tripped and smoked, removed panel to access converter, i see a black wire exposed, looks like it came out of wire nut of another black wire, where do i go from here to see if converter is bad or just wire shorting out?

This depends on how well you know electricity and how safe you feel working on it...
Making sure the RV is UNPLUGGED put the wire back on where it came from... then while standing clear of the fuse box plug it back in and if you see any smoke UNPLUG immediately...Just to be safe I would have the propane turned off and the tanks removed... but that is me...

Hey Newtome - first of all - welcome to the forum! Glad you found us. If you get a chance, come on over to the new member forum and introduce yourself.

I second Seann - if you are not totally comfortable working with electricity, then I would go to an RV dealer to have it looked at.

Did it work when you were looking at it before you purchased it, or was this the first time? I would be concerned if it did actually smoke. Did it have a smell and all that - or did it simply pop the breaker?

Remember that an RV wiring is not typical of what you see normally. That black wire could actually be a spare positive +12 volt circuit that is unused (mine has several).

Might post a pic up here if you can get a good shot - might help to give you some direction.

Also I second Tafische - be very careful about connecting wires which you think belong together. They may not belong together, and doing so may just compound your problems. TT wiring diagrams are hard to come by at the best of times, unfortunately.

thanks for the replys, this was the first time i plugged it in. you can see that it was "groomed" to recieve a wirenut, it was stabbed into the nut when i was pulling breaker panel out, i barely touched wire and it came out of nut with other wire. the other wire stayed in wirenut tightly, I did smell that burnt plastic smell. it almost looks to big to be in that wirenut, could be a couple of things there: was capped off with nut by itself, and a wirenut came off, or not made up good enough with other black wire and wire nut. I do have pics and will try to post shortly, thanks again for replys!!

Always handy to carry a voltmeter in the tool box. I agree, you can't always tell by the color of the wire.
