Hot water tank leaking

Was going through our new(to us) TT last night and notice that the hot water tank was leaking, more like seaping, at the inlet and outlet fittings. It appears the hoses attach to grey square sided fittings that are screwed into the tank. The water was coming from a crack in the sealant between the tank and fitting. My question is can the grey square sided fittings be unscrewed from the tank, resealed and reinstalled?
Thanks in advanced, Monty

Yes that is a common area that needs attention. The sealant they use dries and cracks from age and movement.

Remove water pressure and drain the tank. Back the nuts out till loose and clean the treads. Replace with Teflon tape, being careful not to over tighten.

Re-pressurize and check for leaks.

norty1 is spot on however, teflon tape is hard to use properly because you have to wrap it evenly and to just the right thickness for the "perfect seal". Too thin and you accomplished nothing, too thick and you could crack the fitting if its brittle from age. Most plumbers use pipe thread compound as it flows evenly and creates a perfect seal. I use Great White from Oatley. Just sayin!
