Is this normal?

Hey so I just took out my new X23b out for the second time and noticed a lot of soot outside the water heater. I've never had this problem with my tent trailer.

What you guys think?

If it worked okay before and has not been adjusted you may have something blocking the air vent on the burner tube. Perhaps spider web, they are famous for getting in there.

It is not getting enough air so the mixture is too rich causing the soot.

Robbbyr hit the nail on the head here - definitely looks like an air mixture issue...

I would take the cover off and observe what the flame looks like and where the soot is coming from. Sometimes long skinny brush will clear a spider web out quickly.

If it's smoking somethings wrong.

Ours looked like that and they replaced the hot water heater under warranty. I'd take it back asap.

It is even possible that the small (1/4" head) screw that locks the air adjustment shutter was never tightened properly and the shutter has slid too far "closed".

If it isn't debris blocking the air, it could be the shutter has moved. See picture below of my shutter and the lock screw from when I replaced my temperamental tankless with a 10-gallon Atwood XT.

In most cases of soot like this, a spider has built a nest in the burner tube. Been there myself with spiders.
