Jack stands and 4 tire replacement

I have a question. First time owners. We have a 1998 jayco eagle 264 bunk house. We need to take all four tires off and take the tires and wheels to our tire supplier. And have new tires mounted and balanced. Can we put the camper on 4 3 ton jack stands? Would be on jack stands for a couple of days. Is this safe? And when on jack stands do we also put down all four stablizers? Or should we do one axle at a time? Has anyone ever done this?

I do it one axle at a time and place jack stands under the axles on the side being replaced.

I have done mine a side at a time several times. I just don't trust leaving it swinging unless my truck is attached and I can't do it cause I need the truck.

It has worked out well when I did it that way.

I did the same thing on a Coachman I owned some years ago. Trailer was on a level concrete surface, and I put the stabilizers down. Trailer was on stands overnight. Worked out out fine.

No problem to pull all 4 wheels and tires- just place the jack stands near or under the spring perches on the outer ends of each axle. That way you're supporting the trailer just like the wheels/tires do normally. I see no reason to worry about the stabilizers, but it won't hurt anything.

You're good, IMHO you can put all 4 jacks under the trailer, not much different than the trailer wheels and tires except the sidewalls of the tires will give and the jacks are solid, just be sure to be on level ground

Or.....why not just take the TT down to your tire supplier and have them take the tires off and put back on at their place? Worked well for me last year and I didn't have to haul any tires around. Took about 1 1/2 hours while I waited inside. Don't forget to get them balanced also....I forgot.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

I did one side at a time. The 5'er was still sitting on the two wheels on the "other" side and was very stable. I did raise the rear stabilizers. Worked great.

On a Montana I wonce had I changed all four tires. What I did was jacked up one tire remove the tire replaced it with the spare then remove the other tire and had both of them replaced. when that was done I reinstalled them and did the same thing to the other side always having three tires on the ground. it was probably overkill but I felt more comfortable doing it that way then leaving one side up in the air

I vote for taking the TT to the tire shop. They'll put the correct jacks under the axles and have the tires swapped in an hour or two.

As long as you have a solid and level area to place the jackstands, there is no reason not put the trailer up on the jackstands. I did this last year and used the opportunity to clean and repack all my bearings at the same time, which the tire shop probably will not do. 4 jackstands is also standard procedure for doing the wet-bolt shackle upgrade (you can search it on the web for video and pictures of similar length trailers up on 4 jackstands). I also used the front jack and the stabilizers to support some of the weight and I felt it made it more secure to prevent shifting while up on the jacks.

Another option if there is a large flat area or quiet street near your tire shop is to practice your road side tire changes by placing one tire up on blocks or ramp and then swapping out one tire at time. Tires pop off in no time with a battery operated impact gun and with a torque wrench, you'll know for certain that your TT wheels are properly torqued.

While changing tires, you may want to consider swapping out your rubber valve stems for metal ones if you have ever thought of a flow-through Tire Pressure Monitoring System in the future.

While all of those are workable and good plans, I would tow to the tire shop.

The views expressed may not be mine in five minutes.

When we purchased our previous Jayco I wanted the tires replaced as they were I believe from 2002, OEM, and were shot. The dealership called Pumill Tire, may not be spelled correctly, and set an appointment for the next morning. That shop is located in Mountain Home, Arkansas. The dealership knew we had a long drive home and assured us we would be in and out in 15 min. Folks I am sure all the employees at Pumill Tire were previously on NASCAR crews. The dealership WAS wrong, from the time we pulled on the lot until we got back in our truck to leave was TWENTY mins. !!! Mounted, balanced, and installed. If you are ever in the area and need tires I would highly recommend these follows.

Another 'tire shop' vote. My local Discount Tire had my trailer jacked up, 4 Rainier tires off, new Goodyear Endurance tires mounted, balanced, installed, and rims torqued in less than 45 minutes*.

* Full disclosure: I had the first appointment of the day (8AM), had the trailer in position before they opened, and they had at least 2 guys working on it for about the first 20 min.

Buy a 6x6 and cut it into 1' lengths, use the blocks as cribbing whenever you jack something up. At Aberdeen Proving Grounds they use wood cribbing to support tanks when they work on them...Safest and cheapest solution IMO.

To those who are voting for taking the trailer to the tire shop... Recently I called at least 20 tire shops and none of them would work on the TT. Some because there was no space for 33 ft trailer, some were saying that their insurance does not cover this, etc.

November 1997 manufactured date dot code

All four tires off and on four 3 ton jack stands

Local guy does mobile service. We take them off the camper, he picks them up, puts new tires on rims and balances, and brings them back for us to put back on. Same day service usually. Now husband is checking the bearings. Me on the other hand....I can't stand seeing on the stands, I have to walk away, nervous Nelly I know

How is the trailer supported on the jacks? Metal on metal or you have anything between the jack and the frame?

Nothing between jacks and frame. Only going to be on jack stands for few hours.
