Manual crank for slide out

Where is the Manual crank position to use for any issues with the slide out if needed on a 33 foot Jay Flight RLDS.

X2 for my 321rlts. I have never had a problem, but I have to admit that after reading about all of the slide issues that other forum members have experienced, I keep my fingers crossed every time I put the slides out put them in.

Simple answer is that it's located near/at the slide motor, but finding it may not be as simple. On some models there will be a place identified by a sticker on the outside of the trailer, some are accessed from within the TT, but on many units it will be located underneath the TT.

In my case there is a small access panel that I can remove from my enclosed underbelly that provides access to the motor where I can attach a crank (or wrench) to manually move the slide.

My panel opening:

Slide Motor:

If you have trouble accessing the slide motor, contact your dealer or Jayco to confirm the manual location area.

I don't now about any other models but I found the hand crank on my 321RLTS.
There is 2 place's 1 on each side of the spare tire for each slide. You have to lower the spare to access the screws holding up the covering on the under belly. The screws look like a torx head but they are a square drive. I took out the dozen screws or so and the slide-out motor was in center of the opening. It takes a 5/8 socket to turn It. If you ever need to put your slide-out in in this manor be prepared to be awhile cause you can barely see the gears move when you are cranking.

The access panel on the 322FKS is the same but no tire to move.

Thanks all for the information. One last question, when using the rachet does that release so you push the slide in or does it actually draw the slide as you use turn the rachet. Great inform from all, Thanks.

The ratchet turns the motor and gears.

Yes.

Word of caution; When turning the slide motor drive manually the slide will move extremely slow...., make sure that the slide is moving in the proper direction (open/close) to avoid damaging the motor drive assembly or drive mounting.

Confirming proper rotation at motor drive: The best method is to open the slide about a foot automatically while it's functioning properly, then turn off power to the slide, now manually turn the motor drive and confirm the rotation at the motor drive that "closes" the slide. Mark the drive with a rotation arrow so that in the event you have to manually operate the slide the proper rotation/slide direction is known.

If the gear box fails, the crank will be useless.

If the motor fails, the manual crank will work.

Pray you never need to use it. It will happen when it's cold and raining. Laying on the wet ground under the trailer, is not much fun.

You are correct on all accounts. If the gear box fails I guess you can disconnect the motor then recruit a few big guys to help push the slide in. If they don't mind getting wet.

I did a dry run on this procedure last year on all my slides. The info says to apply 12v to the motor brake to disable it prior to manually cranking the two big slides on my rig.

I posted a thread on here with pictures. Of course if the gear box or motor is bad it won't matter.

It does pay to manually look at the location and procedure because it is never convenient when it does fail.

I have had one minor problem that was easy to fix in almost a year. I don't live in fear of them failing but knowledge of how they work can ease your anticipation.

I noticed our new trailer has a slide lock. of some sort, which you attach when you are in motion. Does everyone use these locks? We have not picked up the trailer yet..

Our trailer came with bars to lock the slideout in while in transit. We've always used them.

Good point to know when preforming a manual test, not all slide motor drives are the same. But your correct, depending on the nature of the failure it may be a moot point.

Unlike other slide motors I have seen, the Jayco ones DO have a battery powered brake, it is on when battery is NOT applied. Separate wires on the slide motor for it.

You sure? Looks like two wires in the pictures above.

Your correct, mine only has the two wires running to the motor. The following is from the service manual for my style of Jayco slide mechanism:

"MANUAL OPERATION:

WARNING!
Always disconnect battery from system prior to manually operating system. Failure
to disconnect battery can cause electricity to backfeed through the motor and
cause serious damage to the system as well as void the warranty.

The Lippert Electric slide comes with a manual over ride system. Locate the crank
extension with pin outside of the chassis main rail as, Fig. 2, page 7, shows
underneath the unit on the end of the motor (If your crank extension is under the
inside of the frame, please refer to page 8). This is where the crank handle
(standard fifth wheel landing gear crank handle or 3/4” socket and ratchet fits on to
allow the manual extension/retraction of the room, Fig. 4-5, page 8. Simply take
the crank handle (through-frame models) or wrench, ratchet or drill with a nut driver
(in-frame models) and rotate it clockwise to retract and counterclockwise to
extend slide-out. It is important to note that you DO NOT need to attempt to
disengage the motor as the actuator is “manual ready” Just hook up and crank."

I believe the slides that have a motor drive with the 12VDC brake have a third "brown" wire, and they may also have a manual override switch next to the slide open/close switch (?). If this is the case, then I agree the manual operating procedure will be different than described above.

Bob

Obviously there are many different slide mechanisms. The ones on my rig and likely the Pinnacle has a separate wire for the motor brake. There is no disable switch on mine. The info I got on the Lippert site details how to put voltage on it to disable the brake.

I have put my hands on my slide motors and have posted pictures on it in another thread. I am currently trying to find them.

What is the current draw for the brake?

Seems this parasitic draw could drain down the battery.
