New Trailer - Power Tongue Jack Keeps Blowing Fuses

The power tongue jack is the hot topic today...

Just brought our new trailer home this evening and can't get it off the truck. The power tongue jack worked at the dealer. Drove 20 miles home and it keeps blowing a fuse. Trying to figure out what the issue could be. The wiring is all new and appears in tact.

The bolts used to connect the jack to the frame do not have any screws installed. Thought this was weird, but i'm not familiar enough to know if this is normal. Just wondering if i have a ground problem.

Any others who have experienced this issue?

Some recent threads about fuse blowing if you run the jack all the way to the top or bottom. Too much torque on motor, motor over draws power and fuse pops.

Also check motor info to see current draw and make sure you have sufficient fuse size

You should have a manual crank that came with it, most of the brands you can twist top off and use manual crank and get trailer off hitch. Do this until you can figure out what's wrong.

So far no issues here... But was told by dealer that running jack too far up or down would blow fuse. I use a 6x6 block of wood under it and don't retract it up past white sticker on mine and no issues yet (knock on wood).

ha ha. Ya'll are so helpful. My 7 year old was playing with the toggle on the tongue jack as i was connecting the trailer at the dealer. While he cranked the jack past the white sticker that clearly says do not retract past this line....

I manually lowered the jack till i saw the sticker. Put in a new fuse and i'm back in business.

SouthCo, you probably saved me a trip back to the dealer to have them show me my screw up....

Glad to see you have it fixed. Now you are a jack expert and can help someone else.

This happened to us too, although one time we figured out the fuse hadn't actually blown but the connection between fuse and battery had been jarred a bit loose and that seemed to fix it. Just one more thing you could check if it happens again.

People with 5th wheels have the same problem, over extending or raising the jack when it is already up.

You need a slo blo fuse for the jack. Also, don't reverse the motor direction without letting the motor come to a complete stop first. I learned both of the these lessons the hard way.

Man you learn something new everyday.....

I have a power tongue jack and I was not aware of blowing a fuse if you raise the jack too high!

Glad I saw this thread.

I need to put the amp clamp on my jack to see just how close this thing is in normal running current draw to the suggested fuse size. Anyone done that? The question is what is the normal running current on this jack when it's lifting a load.

my jack ratches in the full up or full down position. I have yet to blow a fuse. the + wire is connected directly to the battery, and use one of the jack mounting bolts with a star washer for the -.
