I think the thermostat is pressed onto the wh. Find it clean it and reinstall. Can't hurt!

One other member had the same problem. His ended up being a partial open bypass valve letting some cold water mix in with the hot water out of the heater.

Welcome Harmopa! Is it hotter on gas?

You will generally not find a traditional thermostat on that water heater as it is fixed. First thing is definitely the bypass valve on the rear of the water heater.

As mentioned, check the bypass valves.

If you only have one bypass valve, you'll have a check valve on the hot water output. It will look like a pipe nipple, but the insides is a one way. Those are notorious for sticking. I took the insides out of mine, making it a straight through, put it back on and added a Flair-It three way valve like the other one, so now I have an "old style" bypass system.

Does this happen only on electric, and you get good hot water off of gas? If so it is likely the electric heater element has an issue. Not sure if it is replaceable on your hot water heater...
