Pilot Light Hot Water Heater

The pilot light on the hot water heater doesn't stay on. When I light it and turn it to "on", if the heater works, it stays on until the heater stops. If the heater doesn't come on (already water is hot enough), the pilot goes out when I turn it to "on".

This is a constantly lit pilot light (not ignition) and a new tank of gas.

Any suggestions?

This usually can be repaired by cleaning out the line that feeds the pilot. Disassemble till you can access the end of the small tube and either clean it with a small wire or blow it out with air. Just a small cobweb or dirt dauber can foul it up.
