Proper Care of Battery Maintenance Equipment

I have 3 flooded deep cycle batteries (2 Trojan T-145 & 1 Trojan T-1275) on 2 trailers and have finally purchased a load tester, hydrometer and battery filler jug with auto stop. My questions are:

1. How do I properly clean the battery acid out the hydrometer? Is clear water enough to flush it out or should I add baking soda to neutralize the acid?

2. Should I use a turkey baster to top off the cells or the jug with auto stop? I bought the jug but am having second thoughts because it appears the tip will get battery acid on it and I don't want to mess with the clean up. Can I trust the jug to stop filling when the water has reached the proper level? Will the distilled water in the jug get contaminated when filling the cells?

All information & suggestions welcome.

Ken
