Soggy Awning

While closed, the Carefree awning on my X17Z collects (and retains) rain water. Not only does this make for an unplanned shower when I open it, but it also results in mildew staining (this time, orange splotches) I keep the front of the trailer 2" above level and the awning side about 1" up which keeps rain from collecting on the roof, but does not keep water out of the awning. Any recommendations?

Mine does too. Every time I open the awning its wet, not sure much can be done about it. I try to air it out often.

My old Jayco PUp had a heavy, zippered storage "bag" which was mounted on the railing and into which the awning closed. Wonder if there is a comparable product out ther that would work on a Carefree?

You can buy awnings with an aluminum edge right next to the coach. It covers the awning fabric and keeps out a lot of the water.

Just love coming up with answers to my own questions (well, part of my questions, anyway). Take a look at http://www.moldarmor.com/product/mildew-stain-remover-plus-blocker-32-oz-fg523. The product is rated as safe for use on rv awning material and has pretty good reviews, so I think I'll give it a try. Won't stop the unexpected shower problem (still researching that), but at least I won't be getting a face full of wet mildew next time I open the awning.

Hi BluJay,

... same problem here. I'm with Crabman on this one. I keep it as clean dry as I can, but it still has some discoloring, or blothing. I had the same idea of a protective bag (I too had a Jayco PUP.), but I think there would be little demand so they would be very expensive. While it's a good idea, I don't think most owners would be willing to use it because of the height issue. On the PUP it was chest-high and easy to deal with.

I'm still thinking of making one. If you hear some aggravated noises coming from the southeast, that's probably me talking to my sewing machine.

Will rolling the awning " under or clockwise" help. The water should just run off. Larry

you can cut a 2L plastic pop bottle to fit over the ends when in storage.. this will keep the water out but you will have to get up there and remove it every time you want to use the awning..

Good post!,

I know that there is large spring inside the roller, but it would be kind of neat if the awning was able to roll up on the inside of the tube, therefore protecting it. As previously mentioned you can put a large plastic tube with slit in it over the roller but it gets put on once the awning is rolled up. Here is a job for a tinkerer.

Which way is your awning rolling up? Is the tube rolling your awning over the top towards the ground or is it taking the awning from the bottom and rolling it onto the top of the awning? I don't know if you can do it but I would think that the awning tube could be reversed to take the awning in over the top. By doing this the awning will act as it's own cap eliminating pooling water.

Also I am assuming that you have a manual awning as the power ones can be easily flipped just by keeping the motor engaged in the out postion.

I bought this and don't have water collecting in the awning. I got it mainly to keep the UV damage down.

I was thinking of something like this ^ that help stop the rain from entering your rolled up awning but you dont have to remove it, just stays perm mounted. Just the cheap plastic gutter flipped upside down and attatched somehow with brackets to the TTs gutter or even roof. Might beable to add the end caps as well, just a thought. (excuse the MS Paint sketch)

One way I reduced, but not completely stopped, water getting inside my awning was reversing the way I roll it up. Instead of having a "dip" where the awning attaches to the TT, the awning goes straight out from where it attaches to the TT. I hope I explained it in an understandable manner. In other words, water really can't enter, it just sorta rolls off the top.

Hi exjay1,

...and what do they say about great minds,eh? I'm attaching photos of my $7.00 fix, and basically, its the same idea as yours.

Of course, this would not work (well, not for very long, anyway) while towing. However--so far--it seems to be doin' OK in the driveway. Hope that holds true thru winter storage.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks--I'll let you know what's happened when I take her out of hibernation next Spring.

What brand of gutter did you use? I am going to do your great mod, and hope the gutter will "lock in" to my trailers gutter.

I think its safe to say my awning is currently in a soggy state. Just had 4 inches of wind driven rain and still raining hard.(sigh)

ID:	5641Yesterday I did this mod to my 17z. All I had to do to the stock plastic rain gutter was to cut a small notch from each side at the end. The notch is cut to allow the gutter to fit around the awning bracket. Click image for larger version
