Tail lights on Jayco eagle

The taillights on my camper have died and i am replacing them with a new pair.
When i took all the screws out and tried to pull the old light off there was this sticky substance like blu-tack behind the light that sealed it from the weather.
It was about 10mm thick by about 20mm wide.
Does anyone know what this is ?
Cant put the new lights on because of the gap behind and i dont want to just plug it full of silicone.
Graham.

It is sort of strange that your tail lights would just go bad. Everytime I have something like this happen it is 99% of the time associated with the contacts in the 7-way trailer connector. I always squirt in WD-40 in the contacts before hooking up and move the the plug around good before snaping in place.

I have had a shorted automotive bulb in the light fixture cause this problem as well...
