Tongue Jack Failure

We just purchased a 2015 Jayflight 28 BHBE Elite. During my first set up the power tongue jack would only work when my truck was plugged into the trailer. My manual override worked fine. While using the manual override the electric kicked back in.

Anyone else having problems like this.

First check would be the 30A in-line fuse right up front. Make sure your battery is connected properly.

It is strange that it began working again once you began manual operation. This would indicate to me that the motor could have been bound up somehow. I would have expected the fuse to pop in that situation.

Be careful not to run the jack to the end of its travel either direction, you could pop the fuse. Also be careful not to reverse direction until the motor has stopped completely. And go out and get yourself a handful of 30A fuses, you'll need them eventually.

We blew out 30am fuse 3 times within the first couple times using it. I think we have it figured out now.

30A ATC fuses.

Gotta add a bunch of them to the toolbox.

No, but I've blown a couple of fuses already. This site warned me about that so I had a package of spares ready.

If the jack only works when plugged into the truck, it probably means your TT battery is/was discharged.

This is also a symptom of a blown 30A fuse on the tongue. I know because I've blown mine before, and when I plug into the truck, I just keep on goin'! Of course, I keep an assortment of spare fuses for the TT AND the truck on hand in BOTH vehicles (yeah, sometimes I'm a belt & suspenders kind of guy!)

I've also forgotten my battery once or twice when leaving to go pick up the TT from storage (I keep it on a float charger in the garage at home). I remove the fuse (to keep it from popping if one of the battery leads touches the trailer frame), and I'm still able to operate the power tongue jack when I'm plugged into the truck.

Of course, that introduces the problem of towing without a battery, but luckily I'm only a couple miles from the house, so I usually chance it on those rare occasions I forget the battery (hasn't happened in a long time though).

I replaced my electric tongue Jack last month. There isn't a clutch in these generic jacks jayco is using. If you retract it too far or overextend it, you will blow the 30 amp inline fuse immediately. I replaced mine with a Barker VIP 3500. The generic is for sale.

We went through a handful of 30 amp fuses this past weekend, so much so that we had to find an auto parts store in a nearby town and buy some more. But after reading this thread, I now know it wasn't anything I was doing -- except extending the jack to its limit -- and nothing "wrong" with the jack beyond poor engineering, and what to watch out for. I think what I'll do is extend the jack to it's limit and sacrifice a fuse, and mark a line an inch or two on the shaft below that point. That way when I'll know when I see the mark to not go any further. There already is a mark near the foot of the jack, I just need one near the top.

This has actually never happened to me. I've retracted the jack until it stops several times without incident. Of course, the very moment it stops, I release the switch because I'm usually about to release anyway because I don't want to go until it stops. If I were to continue to hold the switch even a half second more, I'm sure the fuse would go, but it hasn't happened yet...

I salute your jack or your fingers!
When my jack gets to its limit, even if I'm thinking about stopping or even if my finger pressure eased and has begun releasing the switch, there's
no change in sound or POOF! BLOWN!

I'm SUPER surprised it's never happened. I guess I'm just lucky! Since I have a bunch of fuses, maybe I'll TRY to blow it. If I burn up the motor, then I can get a new one! I HATE the chinese crap OEM jack, and hope it dies a horrible death. My luck it will last forever just out of spite, and I'll hate it the whole time!

A great little modification is to replace that 30 amp fuse with a a 30 amp auto reset circuit breaker. They're under $5 at any auto supply store and plug in like an ATO fuse would. No more blown fuses to worry about.

Tongue Jack Failure

If you're thinking of replacing your jack, I heartily recommend the Husky 4500lb jack w/ remote. It's real nice to be able to back up using the backup camera, and then using the key fob style remote to lower the coupler onto the ball without ever leaving the drivers seat.

It has a ball screw, top/bottom limit switches and doesn't seem to struggle at all with my 1300lb tongue weight unlike the stock jack.

This is the exact jack that I have in my wish list. Problem is that on Amazon, the price recently increased significantly
