Wheels loose again
As I posted on an earlier thread our mechanic found both wheel hubs loose on our new swift 184 while doing the initial brake adjustment recommended by Jayco. Since then we have gone on several short trips with no problems. Checked the hubs again last Monday as we were headed for a 300 mile round trip, all was well.On our last night in camp I decided to check them again and sure enough both wheels were loose, mind you this is the wheel hubs, not the lug nuts. Removed both wheels, checked and repacked the bearings, and put the wheels back on. Stopped every 40 miles on the way home and found at least one wheel loose at each stop. TT is now at the dealer and we are waiting to see what the problem is. There is a sticker on the wheel hubs that says '"left hand threads " and the hub threads are right hand. Has anyone had anything like this? Our dealer says he has never seen this happen. I will follow this up when we have more info.......happy camping!

I do not know anything about the Swift’s suspension system. But I would be willing to bet a smore that the axle was installed backwards.

Dosen't it have a castle nut with a cotter pin to hold it in place? Just curious.

yes, nut keeps backing off. mechanic tells us only a matter of time until the nut sheers off the pin.

You might consider filing a report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration here. This is the governmental entity that investigates and if necessary issues recall notices for vehicle (including trailer) defects. There may be owners of similar trailers who don't yet know of the problem and need to be notified.

There not supposed to be tight , tighten them up , back off a 1/4 turn install kotter pin . Too tight you may burn out bearing .

Backing off and shearing the cotter pin? Anything generating that much force (which I really doubt) needs to be investigated. There is something very amiss here.
I agree, the most likely problem is the axle is backward. Even at that I cannot imagine shearing the cotter pin.
Is one side right hand thread and the other left hand threads or are they both the same?

This makes me wonder if the races are pressed into the hub all the way.

I would definitely find an expert mechanic to determine what the problem is. Something is not as it should be. The $10/hr guy at the dealer might not be the right guy for this.

I'm with Clutch on this one - the loosening nut is so gradual and the shearing force on the cotter pin so small (assuming the correct size cotter) that it shouldn't shear. I would look at the inner bearing races not being installed all the way back in. They could be working inward every time sideways stress is on the wheel, causing an apparent loosening of the nut. And as Kipper said, they are not supposed to be completely tight, anyway.
