This is HARD to believe

At least 1 time a year somebody hits this bridge even though there are TONS of signs and warnings.

SALINA, N.Y. -- A Florida man driving an RV on the Onondaga Lake Parkway hit the bridge -- shearing off air-conditioning units, awnings and antennas from the RV -- but did not stop, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said.

He must have lost his hearing aides earlier in the trip.

That 's a CSX bridge, and it gets a lot of notoriety. Back in 2010, four people were killed on a two level bus that was coming from Philadelphia at 2:30 in the morning. It was a sad day for a lot of folks. Mostly, though, it just attracts trucks.

Looks to be a fairly flat straight stretch, with 4 lanes, I assume fairly busy. Surprised they haven't excavated the roadbed down a bit to deal with the issue. If people are dying there, what cost is a human life? I expect these things on sleepy back roads, or where the topography makes it impossible to avoid.

It's not really that busy of a road and there is a bypass for trucks & RVs.

I live in the area. There are bypass roads for trucks and large vehicles. There are also multiple signs leading up to the bridge. I mean many, many signs including a well lit electronic billboard and warnings painted into the road surface well before the bridge.

It actually speaks to how poor drivers are nowadays.

This is a roadway along a lake shore. Digging the roadway down will not work because it will immediately fill up with ground water or rain water since it cannot be properly drained.

Smart thing to do would be to elevate the train bridge, but railroad is not interested in doing that for some reason.

However, this road is a restricted road. No commercial vehicles and tall vehicles are not allowed on this road. So if people actually paid attention, this wouldn't be an issue.

Regardless of restrictions or money, this is completely unacceptable in todays world. Especially, since lives have been lost. It can and should be remedied.

No matter what societies or governments do, careless people will always find a way to kill themselves.

There's a lot of things that should be fixed given an unlimited budget. Reality dictates otherwise.

Elevating a railroad grade to raise a bridge a few feet would require going back hundreds if not thousands of feet in each direction of track to maintain a slope that trains can climb, let alone the cost of the bridge. That's tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars that don't exist.

There is a you tube video of people hitting that bridge. They have cameras that film it.

It looks like the same one.

Really? It's not like a hidden driveway, or that single stop sign immediately over a hill. It's marked, and aparrently very well! Without me physically seeing the many warning signs, I'll have to reserve some, but should we fill in the ocean people don't drown? Sorry, but if you can't read the signs, get off the road. What makes "WARNING - LOW BRIDGE AHEAD - CHECK YOUR HEIGHT" any less important than "STOP" or "LEFT TURN YIELD TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC?" I can see innocent people lost on the top of the double-decker bus as a tragedy, but if you drive a motor home or a big truck and don't know your vehicle, you should lose your license to drive that type of vehicle. Why do we always cut people passes for stupidity? Next week, we'll have lawsuits because every 110V receptacle isn't red and has a sign that says "DANGER - VOLTAGE THAT CAN HURT OR KILL".

Yes completely agree. The cost is pretty substantial.

People have to be responsible for their own actions. We can't bubble wrap the world.

Its not like this is a new problem. There are enough freaking lights to warn people a couple of miles ahead. Distractions are probably the culprit. If they fix the bridge there will be something else like speeders
I lived in Syracuse till 1972 and its the same ol same ol story.

No, this is the one I was thinking of in North Carolina. Same story.

We have a solid cement CN train bridge here in Lansing, MI that get's hit many times and the cement definitely shows the hits over time. To try and stop the hits, they installed signs and even an electronic height sensor that sets off sirens and illuminated signs before they reach the bridge but yet they find a way to hit it. There was even an instance where someone was moving their kid to Michigan State University and was able to go under the bridge just fine when loaded, but on the return trip where the truck was empty, they hit the bridge.

Instead of replacing/raising the bridge, they decided to lower the road underneath the bridge to mitigate the frequency of hits, which did help in that sense but now the road and sewer drains are below the normal water line of the adjacent river just 50' or so away and and every time we get heavy rains, the underpass floods! At least that stops the trucks from hitting the bridge!
