2017 Seneca electric power cord reel length

Appreciate if someone could tell me how long the reeled power cord is. The Jayco site does not give any specifics. Need to determine placement of a 50A receptacle at the house. I'm sure it's the same length as the 2016, so that will do as well.

Thanks in advance!

Seems like 25' but I have not measured it exactly....

25 or 30, I would say. My reel is just forward of rear deals and goes well past the end of the coach.

Thanks Misty Mountain Hop and Memphis02. 25 to 30' makes sense. I remember reading that you are always supposed to unreel the entire length when in use. Looks like a 30' 50A extension cord is in-order....ka-ching!$!

Why unreal the power cord?

Do you remember the reason someone said to unwind the cord completely? I've never heard that and don't know why I would do that

When I am re-winding the cord, I help guide the cord onto the reel so that it doesn't get too thick in any one part. I didn't help it the first time and it got stuck before the entire power line was retracted b/c the cord was almost entirely on one side.

I have noticed in the summer that if I am running the AC and anything else, the coiled cord gets pretty darn warm, especially when the cord is in its storage bay. Others have said that those 50/30 cords can hot when coiled. As always, better safe than sorrt.

There is a possibility that at high loads a rolled cord will not dissipate the heat (from electrical resistance) effectively enough so as not to overheat and melt the insulation. The theory is simple enough, a cord laid out in the open can more readily dissipate any generated heat, a rolled cord might not. I personally have never seen a failure of a wrapped cord in an RV, but I suspect it may be possible if the rolled cord is at (or over) its rated capacity.

My Seneca has a 50-amp cord, which means it is rated at 50 amperes per leg, 100 amps total. I have an EMS and have never seen my power draw higher than 30 amps on either leg. So I don't worry about overloading my cord or completely unwinding it for that reason. But if I had a 30-amp system regularly running close to full load (and it had a reel) I might be more cautious.

Good explanation on how our Seneca power circuit works. Also, the EMS has always been #1 on my long accessory list.

Is a 50A extension cord a normal accessory to have in the event the reeled power cord is not long enough? If so, what length is recommended?

I have two 30' Camco 50 amp extension cords that I purchased from Amazon. Most of the time, I'll use one of those at the campground and leave my Seneca's cable coiled up on the reel. I figure it's easier and cheaper to replace the extension cord if it gets mowed over or something. Plus, it allows me to keep my portable EMS safely inside the power bay out of sight.

I have one 30' 50-amp extension and have had to press it into service a few times. I also held on to a nearly new 30' 30-amp cord I had from my prior rig "just in case". Have not had to use them both yet, but I am ready!

About 18 months, after ownership began in October, 2015, the power cord reel went out.
It was covered under warranty, so had it replaced. I felt that if it happened after warranty, I would pull it out. Yes, it happened about a month ago and after research found the problem was in the switch, the fuse/breaker was not blown. After a day or so investigation, I was able to make it kinda work at the switch or wiring around it.

Yep, took it out. Purchased a 50 amp pigtail and a junction box at Lowe's. Also purchased a female end for the cord. Pigtail allows cord to attach out through the floor opening, but doesn't touch the ground. Now I have 2 extension cords instead of one and you can't believe how much additional space is in that locker.

Motto is "Keep it Simple". They never had trouble with the power windows on a Model T Ford.
