Hey everyone. After a terrible pack out from our companies driver we made it. We left our house 2100 EST Friday night. I'm at stop two after some Monster, Rockstar, Loss of kidney function and some great weather. How everyone else is having a good time.

Oh. And to those that thank me for serving: you are absolutely welcome. Your thanks makes me realize people still care. And I appreciate you. Those words mean so much.

I think you picked a perfect time. We have about 8 days left of a ~10 day window of the weather letting up.

Thank you for your service (in case I haven't said it before... and even if I did!).

I appreciate knowing your thoughts. Sometimes I feel awkward and embarrassed and hesitate saying the words because, even though I care and appreciate your service, I think you've heard it all before. It's nice to know that saying the words is important.

So I had a question on this route. From those with all the good ideas, y'all have been so helpful I love it. Should I stay through Fresno and Modesto, or hope back on the I5 at Bakersfield and then head up?
Hey timbo1083, sorry for the delay on this but I just saw this particular post. Driving on Highway 99 north from Bakersfield is probably a little more interesting than taking Interstate 5, but they are both boring. I would advise to stay on Highway 58 west in Bakersfield. That will merge with Hwy 99 for a few miles then you exit and turn left to continue west to the interstate (about 15-20 miles?).
Hope you are enjoying the drive so far and that all is going smoothly. Oh and thank you for your service!

Will do. We stayed an extra night east of Dallas with family. Hope it's worth our Monday morning Dallas frustration!!! Ah it's family though. I will take your advice and adjust our route. Thank you again. [emoji631][emoji631][emoji631]

Well Timbo.... - couldn't permit the Coast Guard (ret 1990) go unrepresented, so .. my 2 cents on your mission routing. Concur with all southern routes ALCON advised. Considering your Grand Canyon desires, I've a recommendation for that and following. Suggest, rather than leaving your rig in Phoenix, were it me, I'd travel with TT to Phoenix, run up US60 & US93 to Kingman, drop the TT, see the GC in the Rubicon (that part could be tricky), return to Kingman, grab the TT and proceed north through Vegas (skirting it on I-215 on the west side) and go on north on US95 toward Reno via Tonopah, NV. ( I believe Fallon NAS has RV parking, but check first). From Reno, you can travel farther north on US395 to/through Alturas, CA, to Lakeview, OR, then take Oregon 140 West to Klamath Falls, OR, thence US97 and US 197 all the way to I-84. Doing all this from Las Vegas to I-84 will avoid I-5, and most of all I suggest is relatively flat driving. On US97, you might enjoy the High Desert Museum just south of Bend, OR (providing it's open). You'd also avoid the I-5 Oregon mountain passes. Lastly, when driving west on I-84, when you arrive at I-205 North, take it. That way you'll avoid Portland, OR, as well as Vancouver, WA. From the intersection of I-205 and I-5 (north of Vancouver, WA) you'll be about 2 hours from McChord/Ft. Lewis.

Thank you for your service, I was station to Ft. Lewis myself years ago, I did twenty- eight years in the Army and I'm glad I did. I'm about five miles from Ft. Lewis, probably by now you would have made it or are on your way just take your time and enjoy.

This goes against all other recommendations!! Now I'm intrigued. Let me look tomorrow when we are in the middle of nowhere Midland Texas.

That new route suggestion from Jeff1963 made things interesting. I've never gone that way so can't offer an opinion other then it looks to me like it would take longer (although I suspect the mileage from Kingman is comparable). It wouldn't be as boring and there's the added bonus of missing those passes and big cities. Curious to hear which way you'll end up going - it's a long drive either way.

You know I was in back in the Vietnam War era and when they all came back their where a lot of haters for the guys that went over there, they did not get a warm welcome. So I had told myself that I will never do that, I will tell the soldiers now thank you.

So. I like to live dangerously. I got the gas light last night. And kept going. When I filled up...52 gallons lol...won't be doing that again. But it was thrilling and exhilarating.

Sticker shock for me too. Especially since my daily driver gets about 35+ MPG.

Good thing gas is still around $2/gallon...

Alright. In Phoenix. So far so good. Probably staying in a hotel in Barstow. Kids need some pool time to run and stretch.

US97 in Oregon has been a mess for the last 6 weeks. I wouldn't advise it.
