5 Star tuning

I am considering having a modification done to improve my torque and performance by five star tuning out of South Carolina I drive a 2011 Jayco Greyhawk 31fs. Has anyone out there had this procedure done on their motorhomes I am interested in hearing your likes and dislikes

I got the 5 Star Tune online for my 2012 31DS and can say two things:
1- it definitely improve the transmission shifting profile - it does not up- or down-shift nearly as much on grades or acceleration and the shifts are at more reasonable points.
2- on my coach it did not change the gas mileage perceptibly one way or another, as far as torque goes it is also not noticeable to me.

Bottom line - it is a pretty expensive fix. I enjoy the shifting improvement, but probably would not buy it again (although I do not feel ripped-off). If you are mainly interested in mileage and torque I would think carefully, although I am sure it also depends on ones driving style.

Good Luck.

What engine is in the Greyhawk? Is it the V10?

I have a F250 with the 6.2 V8 in it and I have a tuner with custom 5Star tunes sitting in the center console. I haven't loaded them yet because I am still in warranty.

Subscribing to follow along.

Cheers

The Greyhawk uses the V10 engine.

Yea, I did. Love it. worth every penny! I get better low end torque, shifts better too! Doesn't sound like the motor is going to blow up going up a 4% grade.
When you do the install it ups the horsepower, torque and shifting for better driveability. Instead of me explaining everything here, check out the webpage that shows the test by Motorhome magazine:

Got a 1998-2015 V10 RV? - 5 Star Tuning

https://youtu.be/cRkBaFU2bpY

A friend went we me on a short trip and noticed that the engine was running a lot smoother then his previous trip with me. Also noticed better horsepower. Told him about 5 star tuning for his Class A. Now he has it and keeps thanking me for the heads up!

Anyway, that's my 2 cents....

Lord knows I've read just about everything I can find about the tune. I'm just a little leery about my Ford warranty should I get a check engine light and have to bring the rig in.

I just installed the 5 star tune on my 2015 Precept 35UN, Going on a 1300 mile round trip in about 4 weeks, Going to be towing, I cannot wait to give it a try, As for the Warranty, I am not concerned for two factors, 1 - The V10 is a workhorse of an engine with very little issues, 2 -Ford would have to prove that the tuning caused the warranty issue. I am willing to take that ever so slight risk to get much better shifting, horsepower, and torque. This decision is a very personal one, you have to feel comfortable with it. For me, it's an absolute. From what I gather from reading so much about it, the 5 speed, which I have, gets better results then the 6 speed tranny.
Good luck!

Just did our 2016 31 DS. We are in a CG in CA until Thursday and I am anxious to see how well it works. Was awful coming through the mountains with the constant down shifting and engine noise. Will post results on Thursday.

I just ordered mine. Chris @ 5Star tune was very patient and informative; made me feel better about it. So lets see what happens.

Wise choice "GrassHopper"...

BTW, you can always revert to the original factory specs when you take your rig in for service.

Yep. Here's the catch though. I've been told you'd have to have it at a major Ford hub like Detroit for them to tell, assuming you flashed the tune back to stock.

I'm pretty sure I won't be putting 100-200k miles on my motorhome. Heck I'm lucky if it breaks 30 before I trade it in. I'm rolling the dice in favor of all the benefits of the tune. When I trade it, I'll flash it back for whoever ends up w/ it.

This is not a yes or no answer. The onus is on the dealer to prove that the aftermarket part (tuner in this case) caused the failure. If so then they won't warranty that specific issue but it does not void your warranty.

If anybody has any questions about the tune, they are remarkably forthcoming over email. Just shoot them a email via the online form and one of them will get back to you quickly.

I can vouch they have patience, I must've traded over 18 emails w/ them before I forked over my cash.

Was just at 5 star site. I wonder why they offer a 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty option for the 6.8 L V10 @ $700.00. If the 5 star does not void the Ford 5 year 60,000 warranty, why offer one of their own ?

The 5 Star tune "could" void the Ford warranty. It is not an absolute. But I guess that is how much confidence 5 Star place in their product. And they are a business and warranties are a good way to make money.
For someone that is worried about Ford not honoring a warranty claim this would provide good peace of mind for them.

So I took my rig to get weighed this afternoon and I got to spend a little seat time w/ my tuned rig.

I am very pleased w/ the results. The shifts are sharper, and the rig resists downshifting. Merging onto the expressway I did not have to go into 'banshee mode' as she pulled just fine in the lower gears now. Any grades I ran across (mostly flat but there are a few spots where the grade noticeably goes up) did not result in any downshiifting at all whatsoever.

It just feels like a overall better experience behind the wheel now. As I understand it the vehicle has to go through its 'relearn' time since I flashed the tune (similar to disconnecting the battery and the rig has to acclimate itself again). So if I'm this happy now I'm sure I'll be even more happy after a few hours of seat time.

I'm glad I spent the money.

So I just did the drive from Jersey to Disney World. I can't express enough how happy I am with the tune. I did not go into banshee mode a single time. Each time I needed to downshift it went into 4th gear - not straight to 3rd. Also I got between 8.5 - 9 mpg doing 65 the whole way down.

VERY PLEASED !!!
