Anode Rod

Was doing winter check on hot water heater. Removed the tank drain plug expecting to see the anode rod but there wasn't one. Is this normal on a new mh? Do they come equiped to begin with or is the rod an add-on?
2011 Mebourne with 6 gal Atwood heater.

What I found on my Jayco Eagle is that the Atwood Hot water tank has a Aluminum holding tank, there for it does not need a anode rod.
I even read that the nylon plug on your holding tank is the only plug you want to use as it does not promote chemical corrosion as a galvanized or copper plug would. I was also considering putting a anode rod in mine until I read this. I did buy some replacement plugs though as sometimes your old plugs will leak after being removed several times.

yddad has got it covered, no anode in the Atwoods like the Suburbans have. Just a little plastic plug which takes a 15/16" socket and an extension on mine to remove it.

Camco sells an aftermarket anode w/a pet**** but the Atwood is not supposed to need one per their info.

If you ever install an anode rod in your aluminum Atwood water heater, you will regret doing it. The result will be corrosion from galvanic action with the aluminum, and you won't be able to remove the plug. The plastic plug avoids the problem.

Thinks for all the input.
I spoke to customer service via email; They said the rod is on the inside of the coach and would require disassembly of the tank to remove. He did not mention the tank not needing one.
Would not be supprized if the rep has no idea what he's talking about.

Very true, this happened to a friend of mine.

Tom, the Jayco Melbourne has an aluminum Atwood tank and does not need an anode rod. It is a good idea to carry an extra plastic plug because it is very easy to mess up the treads on the plug therefore causing it not to seal good. The heat will also eventually deteriorate the plug somewhat. A little plumbers tape around the threads will make it seal better and make easy to put in and take out.
