Bumper Mount Spare Tire Carrier
Hello,
We are looking at purchasing a 2016 Redhawk 26x1. This unit does not come with a spare tire or carrier but the dealer contacted Jayco and received the response that we could mount the spare tire to a carrier on the bumper. We are having a difficult time locating a vendor who carries a bumper mount spare tire carrier for 16 inch, 8 lug tires for class C motor homes. Do any of you have any information that may help us?
Thank you!

I googled spare tire carriers for class c MH and etrailer came up several times. Most spare tire carriers do not have enough lugs to fill all the lug nut holes, just enough to hold it securely.

Thank you. We had called eTrailer and they said they did not recommend their carriers for Class C spares. We also called Stromberg Carlson and got the same response, so I thought I'd see what info members here had to offer.
Thanks for your response.

My opinion: Too much load for an RV rear bumper.
My truck is an 8-lug (steel wheels) and the through of hanging that much weight on a hollow 4" bumper? <cringe>

That's what we thought also and were quite surprised when Jayco responded to our question that their bumper was strong enough to support the weight of the carrier and spare tire.
Oh boy.

They also sell a "300lbs rated" receiver that bolts around the rear bumper. And a cargo carrier that slips into the receiver.
Put a 100lbs genset on the carrier. Watch what happens after the first pothole at 60MPH... :-(
Just because it is on the market, doesn't mean it will do what you expect of it.

I have a 2014 Redhawk that also came without a spare tire. I purchased just the tire that I carry in my back storage unit. If I ever had a flat I would be calling the road service company anyway, but I would already have a spare that could be mounted to my wheel. That way I don't have to wait for road service to get a tire and end up paying much more for it than I paid for my spare.

I dunno how much their's weighs, but the single 8-lug tire & wheel on my F-350 is in excess of 100lbs.

We were told (at the Jayco factory) that the Motorhome bumper is not rated to carry anything. They said to only use a receiver hitch carrier for a spare tire and / or bikes.
There is a receiver hitch carrier that will allow you to carry a mounted spare tire, and still tow a boat, toad, or mount a bike rack!

Hmmmm, interesting that Jayco Customer Service replied to an email inquiry that the bumper was strong enough, the contact our dealer had at Jayco also replied that it was strong enough, but the Jayco Factory says no.

Kayleys Mom, when we were at the factory service center with our unit, we asked about it. They said that because the bumper is no longer welded on, but just bolted on, it would not take the weight of a mounted spare tire (around a hundred pounds).
They said that if we wanted, we could have extra supports welded on, but they wouldn't recommend altering the structure while the unit was under warranty.
But, if you have it in writing from Jayco that the bumper on your unit will take that kind of load, then why not. Just remember that it has to be centered, so that there isn't an asymmetrical load on the bumper support structure.
Good luck and safe camping!

Thanks very much for that additional information. We're not really big risk takers, so I think we are going to stay away from the bumper mount.
