Buying first RV - What newbe extras?

We are going in Friday to negotiate on a 2015 Greyhawk 29MV. We have a price in mind we will offer, but I want more! We are planning to ask for an additional $1000 in camp store credit towards purchase or newbe items. What new RV accessories would you recommend that we need other than "special toilet paper"!

Oh where to start???!!! Lol

Surge protector- (I need one of these still!)
Extension cord 30 or 50 amp- whatever your rig needs.
Water pressure regulator- if not in the starter kit
Fresh water hose
Water fllter?
Better sewer hose than the one included in the starter kit
Awning mat(s)- depending on size
New camp chairs- depending on what they have and your current ones
Grill- though usually a LOT CHEAPER elsewhere
"Lego" level blocks?- Some use them, others use 2x8 (or 2x10) to level rig
Rear frame mounted hitch for bike rack

Not sure what all your dealer carries, just a few ideas to try to help spend your (or your dealers) money! Lol

Good luck!

Talking Oh Boy....

You have a lot of negotiating power when you have the pen in your hand and are ready to sign the contract / buyers order!

The number one in my mind (as it's a safety issue) is a mounted spare tire!!

Some things that folks get thrown into the deal are:

Replacing the crappy rear TV with something like a Samsung smart TV that you can actually watch at ANY angle.

An extended warranty.

Slide toppers.

Some think that fog lights are a nice add-on.

Many feel that the tank-less water heaters are not ready for prime time, and get them changed out for a normal water heater. And of course, why be forced to use your own propane for hot water, when you're already paying for the electric at the campground.

And, last but not least, a couple of 12v electric fans.

However it turns out, be safe and have fun camping!!

Congrats!

My thoughts are to focus on some of the pricey items which will protect your investment. I would definetly go for the slide toppers, we did not push for that on or recent purchase and I definetly regret that decision already. Other things like surge protectors and a winter cover would be high on my list. To me those are need to have items which you will end up out of pocket for at a later time if you do not include them now. And if you are looking at extended warranty, make them negotiate that up front don't let the finance manager push you after you are already commited to the purchase.

I'd focus on getting things added that need install, that way you could make the dealer include installation. Many of the handy things mentioned can be had much cheaper through Amazon.

I've installed these myself but will have them as part of the deal on my next purchase. EMS hardwired, something like a Progressive EMS, Covers for the vent fans or upgrade them to power with remotes. something like a maxair maxxfan, I installed.

Adjustable pressure regulator. It is set for 45 PSI. All my taps and hot water on demand work great !

Don't forget wheel chocks!

As for the inside stuff:

non-slip shelf paper
linens (bedding/bath towels/kitchen towels)
kitchen supplies like pots/pans, etc.
cleaning supplies
storage totes and bins (totes for storing all the stuff mentioned in other posts and bins for storing things inside so that things don't slip around)
extra phone/tablet/laptop chargers so you don't have to remember to pack them
hangers if you have a closet -- buy the RV kind because they "snap" onto the rod

Most of these items can be purchased at Walmart or even some dollar-type stores. I would not ask for 1000 credit at the store --- maybe 1/2 of that if you need to, but get the other half off the price so you can take it to a local store to get non-RV specific items.

I'm from the 'other' camp; Don't confuse the deal with 'extras'. MSRP is a joke. Final price of 30% to 35% off is normal. Start negotiating at 50% and settle at 65%-70%. Use the CASH saved to buy the un-included necessities someplace with reasonable markups. Wal*Mart and K-mart have plenty of RV accessories priced much better.

Once you become familiar with your RV, you will find that 90+% of the systems are built from regular household parts. Lowes and Home Depot become the go-to place after your RV is out of warrantee.

If it's $1,000 "credit" I would focus on things that are most easily provided by the dealer and which require installation. You might get the installation tossed into the deal as additional incentive. First that comes to mind is a slide topper. Second would be vent fan cover upgrades. A new unit should come with a "starter" kit, but if like mine you will want to upgrade to a better quality sewer hose. I agree with Mike, 30-35% of MSRP is pretty common. You will come up with a host of other things, so just keep a list each time you go camp. Amazon, Camping World are good places to shop, prices are better than if thru the dealer. HAVE FUN!

I agree with the above poster who stated....concentrate on the final price....as most of the items you can buy at a dealer you can buy at half the price elsewhere.

Thanks all for your comments. We had a spreadsheet of upgrades/options that accompanied us into the dealership for negotiating. The dealer discounted the price to near what we wanted but originally nixed all the upgrades/options we asked for. We were finally able to strike a deal with only one extra thrown in; slide-out awnings. This was the biggest/most important option we had asked for. To be honest we were satisfied with our purchase and the price. Now we are having fun shopping for all the newbe extras on our own.
