Charging the chassis battery

Hi all,

My chassis battery on the 2015 Redhawk won't hold a charge. It lasts 3 or 4 days, then goes completely flat. The unit is plugged into the 30 amp service at our house, and I just presumed that the power center would keep it charged just like it keeps the coach battery charged.

Either that isn't the case, or there is a problem.

We're leaving on vacation in the morning, and when I went to warm up the engine to check the oil, I had to use the emergency start button to start the engine.

Anybody have any thoughts on this issue?

Yes your converter should charge the chassis and coach batteries if you are indeed plugged in to shore power. Have the dealer check your converter. However, before you waddle off to the dealer, make sure your "inverter" is turned "OFF"! The inverter should NEVER be turned on if you are plugged in to shore power or the generater is running. That alone will burn up the converter (since the converter/inverter/and charger is all in the same box these days). Do NOT tell the dealer you had the inverter turned on (if it is on).
--Only use the inverter when engine is running and no other power source!

It may not confiqured to keep the coach battery charged. I know that on the SENECAS they were desinged to do that, but that may not be the case on the Redhawk or even the Greyhawk. Our 2001 DESINGER "C" did not have that feature. With that said, the battery should not go dead that fast so I would take it to a FORD dealer and have it checked since it would be under their warranty.

Thanks Grump & qwed, We'll be in Middlebury on Monday, and we'll let them take a look at it.
We've never used the inverter as it only runs the TV on this unit. I wish that it powered an outlet where we could plug in a laptop or tablet.

Well, we just got back from the Jayco factory. We found out that the converter does not charge the chassis battery, and needs to have a trickle float charger on it while it's sitting over the winter.

Who knew....
