E450/V10 Oil Change

Since I have had a hard time finding a place who will change the oil on it, I am going to do it myself. Anything special I need to know or is it pretty much a standard oil change job?

Unless they've made major engine changes since 01 it's a piece of cake. It's actually easy since it sits higher off the ground. I never used a jack or ramps when we had our 32' Designer.

Very easy oil change, everything is right out in the open. I work on several of the E450 Chassis at work with the V10. If you want a Napa oil filter, the good one is PN 1372. If you want a bit cheeper, 21372. Both are good filters, the first one is just supposed to be a little better. Personally, I run the 21372, but we are changing oil every month and a half (5000 miles). I also use a heavier oil than what is recomended. I figure that the 5W20 is just too thin for what is expected of those engines (im no engineer though). We use 15W40 in all of our fleet, and in the 12 years Ive been working on them, we have never had a gas engine failure. We have had diesel failures, but I dont think it was related to the oil, I believe it was just the 6.0L.

Ford uses 5W20 because of the close ring tolerances. You are probably doing yourself a disservice running the heavier oil. I was told to always run 5W20.

Just what I use....

Well I use a K&N's Premium Wrench-Off Oil Filter HP-2010 filter
http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=HP-2010

These are great filters and I do like that it come's with a 1” nut welded to the top of the canister so they can be easily wrenched-off with a standard tool.

High Flow Premium Media, Resin-impregnated filter media traps 99% of harmful contaminants

Hi,

The last time I was at the Ford dealership they were replacing a 2013 V10 engine that the owner had put 10W30 in it. The shop manager said that because of the fine tolerances, and the small size of the oil ports that you MUST use 5W20.

I also can't find anyone to change the oil, so thanks much for the video!

I might just be lucky??? But I've been running heavier oil since I started working on these cut-aways (12 years ago). I have several with 200+ thousand miles on them, and 3 well on their way to 300000.
I've heard of the close tolerances, but as a mechanic, my brain works oppsite. A new (low milage engine) will have very tight tolerances (i get that), but as they get older, those tolerances will decrease (get bigger) there for, I see as an engine with over 50000 miles on it, will have more tolerance and can use the thicker oil, which takes up those tolerances.
I have also found that my consumption has decreased with thicker oil. I think that with the thiner oil, it is able to get past the rings and be burnt off the cylinder walls, where as the thicker oil gets cleaned off the surface better.
Just my $.02... Im sure Ford spent millions of $ to figure out what will get them the best mileage and EPA approval, but this has worked for me for hundreds of thousands of miles with no major mechanical problems...

I believe the issue is the close tolerances where the camshaft spins in each head. The thin oil is for a proper lubrication of the camshaft supports. The 4.6L V-8's had a high failure rate if a thicker oil than 5W20 was used. The 6.8L V-10 is a similar modular engine with the same basic overhead cam design. I use the Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic oil. It has 62,000 miles and burns no oil. Using 5W20 oil gives me peace of mind. My brother had a 5.4L with 200,000 miles and was still using 5W20 and the engine still was not burning oil.

To the OP, sorry to get off topic. Overall, you need to use what makes you feel the most confortable... The answer to your question is yes, it is a standard oil change and I believe any DIY'er wont have any problem changing the oil on your MH. I'm sure the subject of what to use could be a 20 page debate, since there are soooooo many opinions out there. Again, sorry to get off topic....Dave

Changing your Onan 4000 Generator motor oil

I thought being that this thread was about changing oil that why not add changing the oil in our generators...

Regarding oil viscosity, some manufacturers actually spec 0w20 for certain new cars.

Oil change was insanely easy. Won't pay premium dollars for that again. Oh yeah, Wal-Mart is $10 cheaper on Mobil 1 than Autozone....on the debate, I went with the recommended 5w20...no sense in second guessing the engineers.

Of all the filters I have changed over the years, That is the first time I have seen anything like the nut on the bottom. Sure beats jabbing a screw driver through the filter to remove it, when you can't find the special pliers. I am sure other brands will follow. Stan

Ford changed the oil from 5W-20 to 5W-30 for the 2016 year 6.8L V10 per my Ford manual and engine oil cap.

The K&N filters with the nut on the bottom are not new, they've been on the market for several years.

I've always used a "oil filter wrench", they come in different sizes for different size filters, even WM sells them, just find the filter you need and then match it up to the correct size wrench. Never had "special pliers" that worked worth a $%^&. LOL

Odd. My manual for my 2016 is still specifying 5/20.

I checked with my Ford dealerships service dept. He said that it's still 5/20, and that anything else could cause catastrophic damage

Correction to my previous post. The 2016 manual does state 5w30 as elcheapo stated above. I just confirmed in my manual, On the dipstick and with the Ford Dealer during our alignment. Doing our this weekend.
Thanks!

That's a HUGE amount of miles for a gasser engine. And here I am wondering if mine will get to 50k w/o serious problems. I've never owned a Ford and certainly never owned a V10.
