External propane.

I know I only have this baby Redhawk. But in our camp I see a big class a that has normal grill propane bottles attached instead of using your on board propane. As we are living in this now for awhile and moving to fill propane is a pain; so we all have this option?

What you need is an Extended Stay Propane setup.

Google it and you'll find a few options

We put an "extended stay valve connection" on our Seneca and use it every winter. It was a simple one hour install. Parts are a T connection, a shutoff valve and a piece of hose that connects to a 20 lb. or other size tank. I take the hose off when not using and cap of end with a plug.

Works great!

My inlaws have their 5th wheel in our back yard that they stay in during summer months. We have 2.5 acres so not a big deal and besides he cuts my grass all summer. Then they have a home in Florida for the winter. Anyhow they use our back yard as a base camp and do trips out from there from time to time but he has a 100lb propane cylinder back there as he got tired of all the trips to fill up the tanks. I think that is the weight. I know it is probably 4-5' tall. Not sure how he hooks it up but it is possible.

I saw the camco setup on amazon for $70. Seems like a cheap investment for long term stays.

I have a Redhawk 26XD and installed the extended stay valve myself. It was easy and I checked the connections with soapy water. I use mine in South Dakota when I'm up there snow goose hunting off grid in the spring. One thing to keep in mind is don't open the valve on the bottle too quickly or you will cause the safety in the valve to pop and you won't get propane to your RV. I struggled with that initially and thought I hooked it up wrong or it wasn't working until I spoke with a guy at a propane place. It gets turned on slowly and only about 3/4 to one turn to open it. In really cold places, the 40 pound tank doesn't last that long. It was below zero most nights on this trip so having extra along saves having to pack up and head into town. I will probably never use it except extended stays off grid. Heat seems to be the the thing that really uses propane.

"Heat seems to be the the thing that really uses propane."

Absolutely! Its a rosebud style flame hitting a "target" and spreading a lot of heat in a chamber that is inside another chamber where the warm air is that is piped through the cabin.

As an experiment, take a quart style Coleman green propane/butane bottle and hook up to a small torch head or a bar b q pit. In a safe place, light it and turn on wide open. Time until it burns out. Its a $5 investment waste, but will give you a good education of what your furnace is doing.

That is the same tee that I have on my unit called "Extend-a-Flow/Extend-a-Stay". The hose I see connected with the male end showing is the hose that will go to an external propane tank allowing you to use that external supply. The other connection (on top) is what would connect to a BBQ grill or other propane device (like a lantern) with a different hose.

If you connect to an external tank make sure you keep the onboard tank shut off.

One more thing, the connection to the external propane tank is reverse thread. Be careful when you connect it to the tank.

Flexibility!

What I like about having the tee installed is that it gives you access to unregulated (higher pressure) propane for those devices that have their own regulators (most do). The Jayco installed propane plug-in fitting is lower pressure propane from the RV regulator. Best of both worlds!

If you buy the kit, like $70 I think, has two hoses and the adapter

Worth the $$$

I agree - but I was in Camping World a year or two ago and saw they had just the Tee on clearance for $8 give or take. I grabbed it.

Then I went to our local hardware store and grabbed some Mr. Heater branded propane hoses that looked like a match to the diagram. They all worked fine. Fit perfectly.
