First trip with my Toad

Just did a ~3000 mile trip with my Ford Transit Connect on my Demco Dolly.

Only real challenge I found was at gas stations. Definitely need a lot of space and need to consider the path out of the gas station. First stop I had to commit the cardinal sin of backing up, so that I could avoid the dolly trying to steer into the barrier around the pump.

Once at speed, things settled in nicely and when the wind wasn't too high, gas mileage wasn't affected too much. Going up to Wisconsin I averaged 7mpg, but coming back I got around 6 to 7mpg.

Also trying to stop for food someone else would cook normally involves finding a spot to park the entire rig and unhooking the van to get it.

I guess I now realize the challenges that those with Fifth wheels and big travel trailers have to face.

It's a good thing you were alert and don't have 'scars' from your first 'toad' trip.

If you can, it's less worrisome to fuel at places like Flying J with RV fuel islands or fuel when the toad & trailer aren't being towed. Our rig isn't as long as some, but the congestion and impatient drivers around many gas stations makes maneuvering an aggravation we avoid whenever possible.

I always try to use truck stops for fueling, but as my Greyhawk is a Gas engine, I am over with the cars unless i find the Flying J or Pilot with a RV Lane. BTW, I made sure we got the brochure and planned fuels stops accordingly as much as possible. I am all about stress reductions...
