Ford Brake controller versus others

Any thoughts on using the Ford integrated trailer brake controller versus a third party brake controller? I like integrated because it is one less thing in the way of the already tight cab area, but looking for opinions.

The ford part is cetainly about twice as expensive as the Tekonsha P3.

Has anyone installed a third party Brake controller in the cubby on the dash, to keep your shins from being further encroached?

Thanks,

I currently have the integrated one. I installed one in another TV. I like the built in one and it Ce with the tow package.

I've had both. No real advantage except it was built into my Ford from the factory. RAM now offers one included in their tow package

The integrated controller in my '14 F150 works FAR better than my Prodigy I had previously.

The integrated controller gives far better control then any add on I've been around. I had one in an 05 Ford and one in an 2011 F250 that I have now. Outstanding job of brake control. Ford controllers work off of electrical impulses from the truck master cylinder. Both GM and Dodge use an internal pendulum system that is similar in function to the add on units on the market. That was true in 2012 trucks, I don't know if GM or Dodge have changed systems since then.

My p3 also senses the duration of brake voltage and increases the brake output based on how long you are on your brake pedal

I can also set the type of trailer so that the controller adjusts voltage out to compensate for weight

I haven't seen a factory device that is doing that yet, unless,in the 15s

My integrated one works as well (if not better) than the add-on. Readout on the dash is awesome. You can see gain in increments. Pretty cool. You can add it as an accessory but is pricey. On 2008-2012 Super Duty's..you have to replace the master cylinder and flash the cluster. The in-dash brake controller is $385 by itself. Not to mention $400 for the master cylinder and $110 to flash.

I always had the add-on controllers on previous TV's . . . and I have the scars on my shins to prove it! The integrated controller was a must when I purchased the TV for my Eagle. Really like the integrated, and it seems to work really well. I like that it also shuts off the warning beeper on the back-up camera when I plug in the electrical connector.

When ford first come out with them in 05 they had a lot of issues ! "I had one " a few months later they made some corrections but still some issues I think somewhere around 07 they had most of the bugs worked out . If you do a search of the Ford forums you can read about them . As for the last few years they work as good as any. Built in is very convenient clean out of the way having both built in and aftermarket IMP they are both good
