Gas mileage & the posted speed limit

Newbie question perhaps, but nonetheless.....

When the speed limit is 70 is it best to drive 55? or 60?

On our first trip we drove as per the posted speed limit, and we worked out the miles per gallon to around 6 miles per gallon.

We have a gas powered 2013 Greyhawk 31FS

I keep my speed between 60 and 65 most of the time unless the posted speed limit is less than that. I average between 8.5 and 9.0 mpg as per a Scangauge. Mileage will drop considerably if doing a lot hills or you have a headwind. A 3000 mile trip last year from west to east coast yielded 8.2 mpg without towing.

I have checked mileage several times the old school way using the odometer and it ranged from 7.7 (very strong headwind) to 9.1 mpg. The average seems to be about 8.5. We drive at 60-62 mph.

The last two years I traveled almost exclusively at 62mph. I think this year I'm going to just settle in at 65. I'm driving a house and I don't drive it all year long. Whatever I end up getting is what I end up getting.

At just under 65 my beast averages 11.5 mpg and stays in overdrive (low rpm's)

You have to try trips at different speed to see what your rig likes best... many find 62 the best for mileage..

CanucksVenturingSouth, when reading responses to your query look at what rig the responder has. Diesel owners run at RPM at or slightly above max torque to get best MPG. Results for gas engines will be different.

It's a never ending discussion... comes down to what you are comfortable with, and feel SAFE with. There is often that little voice that says that maybe you should slow it down a bit.

We run at 55 to 60 depending on the road and weather conditions. We're in no hurry to get anywhere. We got 11.2 MPG on the trip to Florida, and have the new 6 speed transmission, and it makes a huge difference in mileage, noise and smoothness.

Most vehicles will have a "sweet point" where you get maximum mileage and good response. I find just under 60 gives us both. Each vehicle set up will be different. I've been passed by rigs doing at least 80, in my mind there are out of their minds. Not only is not safe, no TT or 5er is designed to be towed at those speeds. We enjoy smelling the roses along the way, not seeing them on a coffin.

Very happy with mileage on recent maiden trip. Averaged 10.9 mpg at cruise speed of 63 mph.

Nice! I consistently come in at around 8.5. I get excited when I see 9.

Sure would like to have one of those critters in your profile pic. Spent it on a MH instead. MH is much cheaper in the long run but a used plane can be had for a lot less. I've been up in a little one around your area a couple of times. Fun, fun, fun!

62 mph seems to be a good "sweet spot" for most forms of travel with a trailer or motorhome. Certainly helps with the gas mileage and the control during a bad situation.
