Gps

I have a Garmin GPS mounted on the dash (I refuse to use the built in piece of crap). I have an occasional problem with signal being lost, is there any way to improve the signal strength under the overhang?

I don't know if this will help but a GPS really needs a line of sight to the overhead satellites. With that said, some GPSs are more susceptible to dropping out than others. I had one GPS that went blank when I entered the I-10 tunnel in Mobile, AL, but its replacement either faked it (or something) because it continued to "show me where I was. My guess is it KNEW this was a tunnel so just faked it under the correct assumption that I'd be out of there in a couple of minutes.

Possible alternatives are using an outside antenna that may SEE better, or go old school and rely on a paper map!

Contact the manufacturer. Many have a optional exterior antenna. Does your GPS have a antenna jack?

If you're unhappy w/ the signal loss, then I too think an external antenna is about the only option.

Are you able to receive a GPS signal with your cell phone or tablet placed next to your Garmin? My Garmin nuvi2595 works like a charm sitting on the engine cover the only time I lose the signal is in tunnels or on the lower decks of the ferry.
If needed, GPS signal boosters for auto and indoor applications have been around since the inception of GPS. A quick search on Google will give you a list of suppliers.

We just use the GPS on our phones and hang our arms out the windows while driving. You know, like you did when you were a kid.

Just kidding.

I just use a Garmin Nuvi I bought several years ago for a couple of business trips I was taking to out of town cities. I use the thing for the motorhome and the Jeep, and again every time I'm traveling out of town in a rental car. Works like a champ. I mount it near the lower left corner of the windshield on the MH, and the overhang from the Class C coach portion doesn't seem to bother it at all.
