Being a West Texas native and having a son that pilots an 18 wheeler cross country and has witnessed numerous blowovers, my advice is when the wind gets to howling and gusting, if at all possible, park the TV or the front of the motorhome into the wind and ride it out. Kind of hard to maintain a schedule that way but better than the alternative.

We were on our way back from Santa Fe, NM when we began encountering very strong winds. The weather channel said there would be gusts to 30 mph, so we pressed on. We were heading to Moab, UT. By the time we reached Moab, we were in 60-70 mph winds. It was dangerous even at lower speeds. We should have stopped as soon as we started feeling unsafe and next time that will be our plan, even if we have to pull into a parking lot somewhere and spend the night there. In our neck of the woods, bad to worse can happen quickly; and weather forecasts can definitely be incorrect. By the way, the post about the Seneca blowing over is called "Christmas Crash". Very sobering!

We get some wind now and again down here too. Nothing like in WY and all that. I was trying to get the trailer back in storage before a strong winter storm a couple years ago. Half the drive was cross-wind, and we're only talking about 7 miles or so. That was the worst 3.5 miles I've ever driven. I got blown all over the place, had to slow down to 30 in a 55 just to keep it on the road it seemed. Now we try to park it if sustained winds are projected to be over 25 mph. Of course, there is a point at which I will stop caring what it "cost" us to stop, and just park it.

Coming across NM last year eastbound back into TX, we got into some pretty strong cross winds, but it wasn't bad enough we felt like we needed to stop. DW was driving, and she felt pretty uncomfortable. I told her to keep her speed down, and that helped a lot. As our path became more Southerly, it died down and ended up being a bit of a tail-wind, which was nice for a change.

Driving across WY as a younger man, I saw plenty of "high profile" vehicles blown clean off the road, and not just onto the shoulder either. Those images keep me humble, so I've got no problem stopping if it gets too dicey.

I'm compiling a list of reasons why my wife should ok the jump to a full ton truck instead of the 250 we were initially going to go with.
I'm going to try and convince her that the 350 will handle the wind better than the 250 I'm hoping there is actually a small amount of truth to that statement.

Let us know how that works out.

"But the dually has more tires so it sticks to the road so much better in high winds"?

Could work.

Perhaps a small bit of truth to that, but there is a video running around of a trailer getting blown over and taking the 1-ton dually with it. Granted, the truck stayed upright, but it still picked up the back of the truck and carried it a fair distance.

Found the video here:

At what point does better equipment overcome better judgement?

When it makes your DW happy to spend the money on the toys you want.
