Is your drive shaft rusty?
The drive shaft on our 2014 Greyhawk 31FK has a coating of rust along its entire length. Anyone else seeing this under a Greyhawk or Redhawk?
Is this something normal for the Ford E-450 drive train? Can or should it be lightly sanded and painted? Supposedly the Jayco motorhome drive shafts were balanced and I'd not want to upset that.

looks pretty bad, but pretty much normal for fords, check the rear cover on your rear axle its probably rusted also, this happens a lot when you own a boat, never caused a problem,if you are concerned check with a ford dealer there are millions of E450' s on the road they will know, or call driveline in las vegas they know all, actually we had them put an aluminum driveshaft in a 4X4, we still get rust in vegas anything made of iron rusts

THS, you're a sick man! I like it. To the OP, rust on a steel driveshaft is completely normal, I wouldn't worry about it.

every single motorhome sitting on our sale lot, as well as every one that has passed thru my service bays -- has been pretty rusty on the frame and driveshaft. Every make and model (well every gasser anyway-the diesel pushers dont really have a driveshaft per se).

It is normal for a driveshaft to be rusty. I have had 3 Ford trucks and they were all rusty.

X2 - Yep, I double checked my AARP manual and it says that for people my age rust on the drive shaft is completely normal.

I think everything and everybody has an aluminum drive shaft by now!
Undercoating and paint prevent rust......

Well call me anal but I just spent three hours on my new Jayco 31 DS sanding and priming the driveshaft putting a few coats of primer and then if you more coats of flat black paint
While I was under there I also noticed a lot of places where the frame had been extended the gussets that were welded in there was rusty areas all over.
I power brush them with an air tool and some Scotch-Bright pads them primed all the areas and also painted them.

Anal? Maybe, but it looks great. If they use road salt in the winter where you live, it won't look like that for long.

because these units come from indiana who knows what type of weather they went thru on the delivery run, good luck again dans driveline in vegas knows all, just remember that indiana is home of the perfect motorhomes, since most of them come from there, so remember when you have a problem remember that, they are built like my 69 chevy only in the shop once a month, or my fleetwood motorhome i just got rid of because it spent more time in the shop then on the road-also built in indiana, they drink warm beer that do they know- safe travels

Good for you! I could use a little SoCal right now as it's not yet winter here in Indiana according to the calendar, but it sure feels like it. Maybe time to visit my sister, she lives in Santa Ynez.
