Michelin LT225/75R16 LTX M/S- beware!

Once again, I think Michelin may have a problem with this tire. Michelin had a safety recall for this specific tire size only issued Dec. 13, 2013. It was for tires that experienced tread loss and/or rapid air loss. I have a 2013 Greyhawk 31FK with 26,000 miles on it. Traveling from NY to FL I experienced complete tread loss (just like it was recapped) on one tire with two others very close behind. I ended up replacing all 6 tires on this trip to prevent further damage to the coach and possibly other motorists as well as ourselves. The tire never lost air pressure, so my tire pressure monitoring system never gave any warning. The right rear inside dual lost all the tread as it took out the mud flap, tailpipe hangers and the tail pipe heat shield. Thankfully no floor or body damage. Michelin's response was not very reassuring stating I had a sidewall cracking issue. Unfortunately while in transit, I had no place to carry 3 dirty tires to give them. However, I was trying to bring an awareness to them since they have had problems with these tires. My coach is always stored in my garage when not in use and cracking by no means was an issue. It doesn't speak very well for a tire just a little over 4 years old. A Tire pressure monitoring system was always in use. My DOT code was B3JH 009X 3112. The recall DOT sequence was B3JH AKEX 0210-2512. My tires were just manufactured 6 weeks after the lastest recall. Look out - you may be riding on potential bombs! Do you think I replaced all 6 tires with Michelin's - NOT!

Veddy interestink! We have a 2014 31FS which currently has 30k miles. We were on I5 about 100 miles north of Sacramento. Ambient temp around 90, TPMS showing appropriate psi and tire temp. Basically level, straight road. Suddenly the inside right rear tire exploded. We were able to maintain control and easily pull off and stop. The blowout destroyed mud flaps, exhaust anchors and shield and completely destroyed the cabinet immediately forward of the rear tires. Of course we lost everything in the cabinet. The stuff was either destroyed, damaged beyond use or just out of sight along the road. After reading this article I'm concerned about buying new Michelins.

This is not good news for those with long distance travel plans who have this specific tire. So if I scratch Michelin tires because they can't be relied on, what should I be looking at for replacements?

Not to make light of the failures, but how many people have NOT had problems?

Last time I looked, the vast majority of folks loved their Michelins.

As for alternatives, I put BF Goodrich Commerical TAs on the old motorhome, because they were much less than the Michelins. The replaced Uniroyals that had held up very well.

Michelin LT225/75R16 Load Range E

However, it is interesting that this specific tire keeps coming up for problems like in MotorHome magazine, September 2016, page 120. I think the December issue also had something about them. I had Uniroyal Laredo HD tires on my last coach with no problems. Now I'm running Coopers since the Michelins bit the dust. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA so they have a record of it. The newer motorhomes have the M/S2 tires on them. Presumably a correction has been made?

Nice vacation planned and I was about to buy 2 more Michelin's as my spares hanging one on the front and the other on the back of my 31FS. I am watching this thread closely. My new direction may be to keep the two original Michelin's that I have on the front as these are in very good shape. They have about 15,000 miles on them. Then move two of the original Michelin duallys and hang those instead as my two spares. Buy 4 brand new tires for the duallys which is back in that area where much failure occurs. Thus I am only buying two more new tires from what I originally planned and gain the ability to start to move away from a tire manufacturer that potentially lost quality control once again. I am thinking out loud.

Only reported to NHTSA, not HTSB. Interesting that the newer Michelin tires on the motorhomes are a M/S2. I wonder why???

Were your defective Michelin's M/S2? If not then you had the earlier version of this tire before the M/S2 which I understand were all recalled and I believe replaced by Michelin with the newer ones. What would concern me is if M/S2's were failing.

My tires were the M/S, not the M/S2. Michelin refused to do anything since my tires were manufactured 6 weeks after the recall ended. See my first post for more info if needed.

I haven't had a chance to check mine
Will do tomorrow and decide what to do. I may swap them for the cooper's on the MH I'm going to sell. They are new a month ago.
Thanks for your input.

You are right. Why else would they come out with a M/S2? It's too bad that they just won't fess up to their previous problem. Honesty is the best policy, and they have lost me as a customer.

Must be isolated to a particular tire and size. Michelins hereditarily have great positive feedback. Maybe WHERE or HOW they were manufactured...who knows? I've had Michelins on every vehicle I've ever had except one. Michelins are the preferred tire here at the dealership...from just about everyone. I run Michelin LTX A/T2's and have never had problems at all. Again, must be an isolated problem with a specific line of tire. I for one, will never buy anything but Michelins. Now, don't get me wrong, I've had good luck with GY's too. But, between the two, Michelin wins.
