Onan Genni Hour Meter Runs Continously

Hello, just picked up new to us a 2008 Jayco Seneca equipped with an Onan 6000 diesel generator. The hour meter counts away even when the Genni is not operating. I disconnected the negative terminal on the house battery closest to the outside of the camper with the 120AC unplugged from our home and the meter still ticks away. The previous owner indicated this has counted since day one. Why does this poor hour meter think the geni running?
Would like to make this right does anyone have some ideas I can try or have experienced this before? The geni is a 6HDKAH-1044K.

Thank you

Sounds like the meter is definitely wired wrong, the meter should only have power to it when the genset is running. Obviously it getting power from somewhere else all the time. You may try looking at your genset owners manual, it should show how the meter should be wired.
