Overfilling damage when fillng the fresh water tank?

I can add water in the fresh water tank, now that I know I have fuss with two valves to do that. What concerns me is this statement in the owners manual (2005 Greyhawk 24SS, page 40):

Caution: Be careful not to overfill the tank. It can pressurize the tank, causing
leakage and water damage and void the warranty. DO NOT leave the tank
unattended while filling.

How do I avoid overfilling the tank? What I've done with my two previous motorhomes was fill until water came out the vent tube. Am I supposed to stop before that happens? If so, how do I know when it's full so I can turn off the water before it comes out the vent?

You should be fine doing gravity fill until it runs out of fill tube.
I think they are probably talking about someone rigging up a pressurized fill system.

I fill mine and watch the level gauge when it gets to 3/4 i watch it closer. Water will flow out the overflow when full. Just be sure you hhave a pressure regulator on the hose when you fill.

@ Doug, you pressure fill Greyhawk Tanks.

Ah,
Thanks for the information. That's what I love about this site. I learn something every day :-)

Buy one of these. Takes all the guess work out of how full and how much extra weight ( gals x 8.2 lbs) your carrying.

I simply fill it until it starts to splash back at me from the opening. At about this time, the overflow tube starts flowing as well. It amazes me how long the overflow tube drains after I stop putting water in.

That is my method as well, probably not textbook but it works!

Where do you put the meter? If it's in the fill hose, wouldn't I have to empty the tank before filling, so I'd know how much was in the tank?

What they are getting at is avoiding a pressurized tank condition resulting from the incoming water flow rate being greater than the overflow escape path flow rate. If your water fill hose is wedged in the gravity fill port with any sort of seal/tight clearance, you could possibly run the risk of the water having nowhere to go if it's flowing in faster than the overflow tubes can get rid of the extra.

I do the same as mentioned above - watch the level, listen for that "full" kind of sound, and reduce the incoming flow for the last little bit by turning the hose valve down a bit.

I always empty my tank after a trip so I start with an empty tank. Also I only travel with 10-12 gal to save on weight.

I extended my overflow tubes and installed caps on them. Otherwise I lose 1/3 of my water before I get to my camp spot.

Do you know if it will count backward if the water flows in the other direction? It would be nifty to have one on the tank drain that counts up when water is drawn from it, and counts down when water is put into the tank. I'm assuming it remains powered for days at a time, and doesn't shut off after a short period of no water flow.

No clue. It does sleep and then wakes up with activity.

Thanks for the info Grumpy. I would be very interested in that kind of product, but 80% of the reviews said don't buy it. I think I'll search on line for something else.
