Rooftop motor Heat A/c Unit

Turning to you for advice on an issue that was supposedly fixed during other repairs.

First, we have a 2008 Jayco Melbourne 29D

When we try to turn on The Heat and A/C Unit from the RVComfort.HP thermostat inside, all we hear is the hum of the motor. If husband goes up and turns the fan blades it will usually start and we get heat and or a/c.

Is there a relay switch somewhere that is going or does it sound like we need to replace a motor?

Thanks for your help

Sounds like a bad starting capacitor. It is a cheap component. I would start there, before replacing a motor.

+3 for a bad cap.

The purpose of the capacitor is to store up enough energy to get a motor started. Motors need an extra boost to start up from a standstill. The fact that everything runs, makes us all think it's just a bad starting capacitor.

It's not uncommon in a lot of tools with motors.

Now, that said, I've never done it.
But I too have heard it's not expensive and not hard.

Don't let it sit there in that state not running as it will damage the fan motor.

I've replaced both capacitors and fan motors on previous (not Jayco) TT. I'm pretty sure I killed the motor by trying to run the AC off an inadequate extension cord at the house. The capacitor just died by itself some years later.

Replacing the motor was a bit of a job - not because it was technically difficult, but because it was a tight space to get sockets and hands into. Capacitor is a piece of cake, once screw to hold the capacitor and two wires with push on connectors right where it's easy to get to once the cover is off.

I agree your problem sounds like a capacitor. Sometimes when they get super hot (like on a 100 degree day) they physically pop. Other times they just ware out.

Also X2 on the "don't let it try to run" - or you WILL have to replace both.
