ScanGauge for Seneca
T-one day till my Seneca PDI and I cannot slow my mind down . I am now looking for thoughts on a ScanGauge or similar device for monitoring fuel use, transmission temp and such which the Freightliner doesn't provide.
I have been reading about SanGauge and Ultra Gauge was was hoping to get some feedback on accuracy and which way to go.

I own both and Scangauge gets my vote. Easier to use with buttons on the front and getting MPG calibrated was easier for me with the SG. I do like that UG is smaller and you can view more things at once but the buttons and calibrating MPG is a PI my A.

I have an Ultra Gauge in my Camry and Tacoma and am very happy with them. I have the "hard wired" versions in both. Very easy install, easy to read, easy to program display parameters, priced right. The MX model in my Tacoma also reads transmission and actual water temps (as well as dozens of other parameters). After calibration, odometer correction, etc, MPG accuracy and fuel remaining is spot on. I would have one installed in my Avalanche, but trans / water temps and voltage are already displayed on the factory dash gauges. I believe the Scan unit measures the same parameters, but is a little more costly.

I have a ScanGauge in my Seneca and am very happy I do. Refer to it regularly on my adventures. I mounted mine to the left of the small pocket above the sunvisor, a quick glance up to see the readings. Others put it elsewhere, there is another Seneca owner who designed and built center consoles several of us purchased, you can option his console with a pocket just for the ScanGauge.
While driving you can display 4 gauges, I usually keep mine on volts, average MPG, boost, and transmission temp. But you can choose whatever you want based on what you want to see. And the gallons used can be handy once you learn how to use that function.

LOVE my scangauge. -Especially with my custom console from Aaron Murray!
ScanGauge computes time and distance to empty. MPG Current and Average. Temps. Voltage. Load. Everything you need at a glance!

I would not be without the Scan Gage. I always know exactly how much fuel I have burned.

You can set the gage up to read what ever your interestd in.

Just to join the crowd, I've got/used both, both have their +/-'s, you will just need to handle one and use it for bit to see which you like. The UG is cheaper, I had trouble calibrating mine for miles traveled/fuel used/ etc., and gave up on it, but like the # of different functions you could see with just a glance. I ended up using the UG for WT and instant mpg but always wondered about the instant mpg since I could never get it calibrated to my satisfaction.

The Scangauge is within 1/2 gal on fuel usage ( that is probably caused by filling the tank differently ( level or slant ) I love the peace of mind of knowing how much fuel we have left - I like the Trans Temp - instant mpg - avg mpg - boost
I wouldn't be without it since my fuel gauge is drastically inaccurate

Love my scangauge. I also bought the center console and had the insert put in for it. Looks like it belongs there, and it give me all the info I need. I run almost exactly what Robby runs. I run trans temp, boost, avg mpg and instant mpg.

The KR has a few more bells & whistles & bigger $$ The D is the Diesel version - I have 1 of each piggy backed together ( double the info ) I don't use the extra KR functions - geared to a commercial truck driver ( cost per mile - cost per trip & more ) Les

Just got through installing my scan gage, programmed it so that I can keep an eye on transmission fluid temps when towing with my Tacoma. Don't want an expensive auto transmission repair! Works like a charm, easy install and easy to program for the "special" features.

I know there are several variables affecting the Allison temps, but what temp swings are you seeing? What is the upper temp limit that degrades the fluid's service life? Probably a better question for a separate thread.

For a simple dash top install, is it obvious how to run the power and signal cables to the gauge? Extra cable lengths needed?

Have any of you Seneca owners looked into the Torque pro app? You need an android device and an OBD2 Bluetooth adapter. The app is $5 and the BT adapter is $20.
Lots of us diesel truck owners use it.

Don't think the Freightliner's bus is OBD2 compatible.

Ah, ok. I thought the scangauge plugged into the OBD2 port. That's how my scangauge 2 works for my pick up.
