Started Genny while plugged in

I was told by the dealer last year to NEVER fire up the generator while on shore power. I went out today to exercise it and Oops, forgot I was plugged in. Realized it after five minutes of running. Anyone else do this? And were their consequence's? 2017 Redhawk23X2. Thanks, Jay

I've done in a couple of times in the Greyhawk. I assumed the transfer switch was smart enough to figure things out. AFAIK, no damage. But it's something I do try to Not Do...

Your ATM should just ignore the genny if you're on shore power. I've been plugged in and ran the generator the same as you did by accident but mine wasnt an accident. I'd start the genny, then unplug shore power to give it load. Then after 15 minutes I'd plug in again, then turn the genny off. After a decade of doing that I never had issues.

That's what the ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) is for. On the three MHs I've had, the default is for the genset. If you run the genset, it will automatically switch over after 20 seconds. Your dealer was way off base.

I've done it before. You can hear the ATS flip to gen power after the genset has been running for a minute or so. The primary source on our Redhawk is the genset if plugged into power as well.

Not a pretty sight if the two come together, not likely I had a neighbor once who left his gen plugged in and when power came back on bang of course he was back feeding to house
