Summer trip out west
Leaving on our summer trip June 30th. Headed from the east coast to Rushmore/Glasier NP/Banff (maybe)/Cody/Yellowstone/Jackson Hole area then heading back east.
First time in this area. No time limit on travel and just two old retired folks and their dog.
Any suggestions on what not to miss?

Cody
Tom,
If you are heading to Cody then it's a must stop to see the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. It is great and takes two days to see it all. Having been to some of great museums in Europe this rates with them. Yellowstone takes some time it is so large, be aware of the weather, it can snow anytime.
Have a great time.
Jim

The Museum of the Rockies is worth the stop if you are anywhere near Bozeman MT. We also enjoy doing lunch in Viginia City MT and there is a small campground there.

If you get to the banff area.. Lake Louise and Johnson Canyon the the two most beautiful sites to be enjoyed. Plan a day in each, and if you are going to take a gondola ride anywhere.. Lake Louise is a winner.

Enjoy your trip Tom! Safe travels. Wish you could swing by Clinton and me & the misses tag along. Still got that pesky interrupter thing called WORK to deal with.

We enjoyed the KOA at Devils Tower a lot, real nice campground and situated right at the base of it. Unless you really like motorcycles, you may want to avoid that area during the Sturgis rally the 1st week of August I believe as the prices skyrocket and the traffic is really bad. Have fun!

In the Banff area, check out Peyto Lake and the Athabasca glacier.
Awesome!

We also stayed at Rafter J Bar campground south of Hill City, SD last week. Great campground with lots of space. Several wineries in the area. Very close to Mount Rushmore.

I would recommend a drive through the Badlands in South Dakota and while in Cody we really enjoy the Old Trail Town... a bunch of restored old west buildings including the Hole-in-the-Wall saloon where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hung out. Also, Liver-Eating Jeremia Johnson is buried there (portrayed by Robert Redford in the 1970's movie).

We spent a few months in and around the area last summer and still didn't get to see anywhere near all of it!
For us, aside from the biggies (Mt. Rushmore and Glacier), we really enjoyed Custer, SD in general (you have Jewel Cave, Wind Cave and Crazy Horse, as well as Custer SP). Also, the Battle of Little Bighorn near Garryowen MT was spectacular, as was Glacier. We didn't get to do Yellowstone last year, but have it on our todo list in the near future.
