Question Swaying

Just bought a 2014 Jayco redhawk and went on my first trip. I get pushed very hard to the right when a vehicle overtakes me and even on some roads. I looked on the web and a common answer is to get an anti sway bar. Looking for someone who has had this problem and the fix. Thanks

@Kellys...if I am not mistaken, the Redhawk is a motorhome, not a trailer...

@br549vi...this is normal, when you get overtaken the car coming beside you is pushing the air which hits the back of your motorhome and pushes it to the right....then as the vehicle get closer to the front the opposite effect occurs.

You just need to get used to it... It will be more intense when a semi passes you, less when a car does

Ensure your tires are properly inflated!

Being pushed around when you have a rig that big is a fact of life. that said a good anti-sway bar is worth it's weight in gold.. Contact Nancy at Helwig spring for a good a-s bar.

Being pushed by a passing vehicle is not the same thing as swaying. Swaying is a constant left-right oscillation that can be started by one of those "pushes" and gets worse if not brought under control. You just need to be ready for it when a vehicle passes, and on a windy day, passing through an overpass can have the same effect.

We have a 19H. I added an anti sway before our first trip. I didn't crank down tight on it and while passing a semi while doing 60 mph the push was so bad it caused my tow vehicles traction control to turn on. Next exit I pulled off tightened the sway bar very tight no problems for the rest of the trip. Expect some noise on slow speed turns but I'll take that over sway any day.

When I first experienced the "push-pull" I thought it was my imagination. I'm new to this trailering thing after all. After getting passed by more and more tractor-trailers on the interstate (I'm only going 60, ok) I decided it really was happening. The next thing was, "why". Our light weight X23B and the Expedition we pulled with seemed to be affected pretty easily. What I finally came up with was right on track with Salsa's explanation. Our e2 hitch had the integrated sway control so there wasn't any after-effect to deal with and after a few trips anticipating it seemed second nature. Our new 5th and TV don't seem to be affected nearly so much.

my bad I have a jayco motorhome. Swaying was probably not the right word. A hard push to the right is what I mean. As it is right now I would not let my wife drive this. It is way too much fight to keep it in my lane. Just wondering if anti sway bars would help. Have looked at the helwig ones. I just didn't want to buy several things before I find what really works. Thanks

What you are experiencing is a normal occurrence, but the severity of it can be managed. Front tire pressure, proper alignment (by a shop familiar with RV alignments), heavy duty sway bar, steering stabilizer and proper shocks. Jayco markets most of this now as the "J-Ride" package. All but the alignment anyways. I have found that the J-Ride components, with proper tire inflation and weight on the front axles helps.

Before I got a really good front end alignment, trucks and such would bump me over. A large semi would push me over and then pull me in as he passed. Now, it is much better and for the most part I do not notice it except for the occasional clash of air masses that will remind me I am smaller than a semi.

The trick is finding a shop that has experience. Try commercial truck tire companies that service box vans, large trucks and semis.

That I have to disagree with. I had a 2001 DESIGNER and had that problem until I had the front end aligned and had the unit weighed and adjusted the tire pressure accordingly. Don't remember what needs to be at the limit (caster or camber) but since it is a MH it needs to be set differently. A good truck alignment shop should know how to correct the problem.
