THE Difference in Group 27 and Group 31 batteries

Reaching out to those with the experience.

I was always under the impression that the difference between group 27 and group 31 batteries would the physical size and possibly a little more power in reserve.

I read that my Grey Hawk 29MV is designed to handle group 27 batteries.

Because I'm interested in 12 volt batteries with more Amp Hours, I have looked at some Group 31 AGM batteries as well as AGM group 27 batteries.

So .... in those two groups, wouldn't 12 volt be 12volt, and either one would serve my coach fairly...???

Is the coach listed for group 27 because of a concern over the coach's effective charging ability of the group 31 batteries...??? Can my coach effectively charge 3 group 31 AGM batteries ...???

31's will be larger and would need new boxes. From the post I assume you are looking for more amp hours. If that is the case I would look into 2 6V deep cycles, 6V-GEL | Trojan Battery Company

I have looked at the 6 Volt batteries connected in series to give me 12 volts. I have noticed that two 6 volt batteries rated at 150 AH each will still only give me 150 AH total. (I don't understand were those extra AH are lost)

While two 12 volt batteries with 100 AH each connected in parallel will give me 200 AH.

I feel that my issue is group 27 or group 31. Can my coach handle group 31....???

Thanks for your post.....

I'm not a battery expert but my understanding is the 6V can be drawn down lower than the 12V with out damaging them. There are some RV techs here on the board and hopefully one will chime in.

Wet cell batteries either 6 volt or 12 volt fall under the 50% rule. Meaning that you will drastically shorten there life if you draw them lower then 12.0 volts. There is no difference in life or power in 6 or 12 volt batteries if they are true deep cycle batteries. Prices tend to be better if you can use 2- 6 volt golf cart batteries. Sams Club or Costco both offer golf cart batteries which give you a better price for the amp hours that you are buying. The problem is that they are taller and a lot of battery boxes don't have the room for 6 volt batteries without major changes in your battery storage area.

Your system is 12 volt!! It takes two 6 volt batteries to get you to 12 volts. Your 150 AH is only 6 volts. It takes two 6 volt batteries in series to get you 12 volts. Which is why you have only 150 AH when two 6 volts are connected in series. In series, you have doubled your voltage but not your amperage.

Your size of your battery box is your only limitation on what size battery you use. My 5th wheel came with two group 24 batteries. I replaced them with two group 31's. My gross had been 160Ah with the 24's. My AH was increased to 260 with the deep cycle group 31's.

As Ela1948 mentioned, you do not let your batteries drop below the 12.0 volt point, but you also need to know that you can only use 50% of the batteries rated Ah. If your battery is rated at 100Ah, you only have 50Ah that you can use... 50% rule.. You will notice that when your battery discharges to the 12.0 voltage, that is also the 50% Ah point.

So, you need to figure out how much power you need when just running on batteries, then you can figure out the Ah rating you will need. Also, you need a way to charge those batteries if you are dry-camping...

Additional 12V battery

Just for reference, SteveWB from this forum added an additional 12VDC battery to his 2015 29MV by adding it in the compartment aft of the existing battery box. This was his cost to have that added.

- Add one SRM29 battery to house system - install in compartment just behind existing battery box Reinforce compartment, wire battery in and install vent.
Labor Hours - Add one SRM29 battery to house system - install in compartment just behind existing battery box. Reinforce compartment, wire battery in and install vent $297.00
Metal materials $60.00
SRM29 Battery $154.95
Electrical parts (Cable, cable ends, heat shrink) $30.00
51301 Vent unit $2.69
Electrical parts $30.00

So almost $600 for one additional battery. This just for a heads up on what it may cost you. Unless of course you do the work yourself which would save you a ton of money. He didn't change out the converter.

AGM batteries have different charging requirements so you may have to modify or replace the converter if you go that route.

I read that the opposite way (call me crazy). I read it like a group 24 battery WOULD NOT BE enough. Therefor, you need to have a Group 27 or higher battery.

My RV came with an equipment list. A single page document list. I would attach it but the file size is too big. My converter is a Progressive Dynamics PD4060K but your 2016 29MV could be different. Open the front cover of the converter/load center and there's a label right underneath the breakers that has the model number.

Great info .... thanks.

Unfortunately, the coach is at the dealer for some kind of spray coating that was part of the purchase. SO .... I have to wait a few days ......
