Tire rotation?

I happened to be looking thru the Ford E450 Manual and saw the section on rotating the tires. They recommend just swapping the fronts, Left to Right and Right to Left. And leaving the backs alone.

I'm just wondering - does anyone do this?

This kind of a swap goes against what I was taught for radial tires, but if it makes them last at bit longer, I'll give it a shot.

As I have 26,000 miles on mine I had wondered about this myself. Glad I don't have to mess with the dually...

On a related note a friend with a competitors E450 based Class C had a blow out on his passenger inner dually and not only did it do a lot of damage, but when no one would change the tire for him, they towed his rig by the hitch in the back and possibly tweaked the frame.

Gotta keep those tires healthy. Also know that the inner passenger tire gets a lot hotter due to the exhaust run down that side of the frame rail.

Doing some reading on Good Sam Class C Forum where general opinion seemed to be that you just don't rotate tires on the Class C. Interested though on what others think about this.

What are their reasons for NOT rotating?

They said it was not necessary and at 5 years time to buy new tires irregardless of tread depth. I have no opinion until I see what you and others think about it. I am at 12K miles and this service has not been performed on my unit. All tires exhibit no wear and there is no vibration.

Manufacturer

I wonder what the tire manufacturers recommend?
Seems that they would have some insight. The RV is no different that a fleet truck in that sense..so do trucks get their tires rotated or are they supposed to?

Here is what Michelin says:
Tire Rotation | How often should I be rotating tires? | Michelin US

a little "Ask a Question" window popped up. I asked a tire question, and got an answer from a real live person. Pretty cool.

I think that if you are just driving 1000 miles a year, there's probably no reason to rotate, as long as the tires are wearing evenly. Just let them age out, then replace them. Much more driving, I'd probably rotate them every few thousand miles, more if I saw abnormal wear. Really bad wear, and I'd think about getting an alignment.

They recommend moving the inner rears to the front, then the outer rears to the inner position and the original fronts to the outer rear position. Perform three times and you're back to the starting position.

X2 on this answer. Might want to rotate if higher mileage. 5000+
Just my 2cents

This is kinda what I have read. Though I think you have to keep in mind the direction the tires roll when doing this rotation pattern, keeping in mind the original direction the tires roll and not changing that direction.

When purchasing our Seneca, the salesman pointed out that they use all aluminum rims, so rotate if you want to wrestle 300# tires. Some dually rigs will come with an aluminum outside rim and a steel inside for cheap he said so rotating the rears doesn't fly.

on my 29mv I have all steel rims. So this is the plan I am taking for the next and future rotation patterns:

Original location
1 2
3 4 5 6
Location after 1st rotation
4 5
3 1 2 6
Location after 2nd rotation
6 3
5 1 2 4
Location after 3rd rotation
1 2
5 6 3 4
Location after 4th rotation
4 5
2 6 3 1
Location after 5th rotation
6 3
2 4 5 1
Location after 6th rotation (which is back to original)
1 2
3 4 5 6

Cheers

My local Discount Tire rotates and balances for free... so why not have them do the TV and TT! I have it done every ~5,000mi.

BTW, they do torque the wheels. Some places do not.

I never rotated my tires on a tt or fifth wheel. It won't hurt anything but unless you tow it a whole lot the tires will need replacing due to age way before they wear out.

If I am paying someone to change a tire, I want it balanced.
