What is repair record/reliability of Ford E-450 V10

We are contemplating buying a 2018 Jayco Envoy limited edition (173 manufactured) 26-foot motorhome and would like to know of anyone's experience with the reliability of the Ford E-450 V10 engine. Any recall/repair issues that we should be aware of, or avoid the E-450? We are planning a cross-country trip in June from Florida into Colorado, Utah, to Oregon, Wyoming--mountainous terrain--hauling an open metal mesh trailer with a Kawasaki 1200 motorcycle, two bicycles, and two kayaks. Will the E-450 handle this load or will it be a strain up and down the mountains?

I have the chassis/motor configuration in my 29 foot, 2017 29MV. I will say that the motor/transmission has plenty of power to pull my configuration. I don't tow anything yet but there is more than enough power going up and down hills. Most the time it runs around 2200 RPM at 65 mph on level ground. will down shift to 3000 RPM going up hills easily holding 65 mph. If you push it, it will easily do 70 to 80 mph on level ground, running about 3000 or so RPM in 6 gear. Though gas mileage goes down drastically when you go over 65 MPH for any extended period.
Bottom line I don't think you will have any issue with power with the E450 V10 with a 26ft body pulling a open trailer. As far as reliability, I can't say long-term. I have only had mine since Oct. 2016 but so far not a single issue. Maybe others who have had their E450 V10 longer can chime in. Also be aware they changed the transmission starting in 2017 to a 6 speed.

It's almost a bullet proof engine. We had an 01 32' DESIGNER, that we drove for 7 years (55,000 miles) pulling a toad coast to coast with no issues.

We've only had ours since August but in all of my research prior to the purchase, I didn't find anything to be concerned with regarding the engine or trans. The power has really impressed me so far. We tow a 4 door wrangler and you don't even know it's back there. We haven't taken it into the mountains yet but when we do I'm not worried about power.

Just traded 24' MH E350 w/V10. Never been a Ford fan but this motor changed my attitude. No trouble @52k miles. Pulled 3000lb cargo trailer regularly too.

Our Greyhawk has that engine. We've gone through the NC/TN mountains numerous times. While not towing anything, we were pretty heavily loaded to within 400 pounds of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Have never lacked plenty of power.

Before buying I read through several RV and Ford truck forums for info on that engine. Problems are extremely rare. It also comes with a 5-year, 60,000 mile power train warranty from Ford.

Welcome to the forum. I worked in Stuart in the early 70s. I expect that area has grown tremendously since then.

We have had Chevy big block engines for 25 years.
Some small problems but pretty good at towing overall.
Our new V10 Ford is better at everything.
Towing and pulling hills , better MPG
The downside is a bit louder and Hotter and less room in cab area.
I plan to add insulation to help with both.
We are towing 5000 lbs on every trip.

I have a 2016 Redhawk 29XK. Drove it from Florida to Oregon and return in June 2016 6,636 miles with no problems. Average mileage was 9.8 MPG.

My brother mentioned to me in passing, that a few years ago, the V-10 had some issue with bolts holding on the manifolds would break. Cost him a ton of dough. But, that was probably around 2001.

I've haven't heard anything too negative about the V-10s now

The only thing I have heard my friend lost No 1 cyl coil in in his, mechanic said it was common in v10 for losing that coil why I do not know and he said always around 25k. My 2009 so far has had no trouble.

The early triton V10's, up to about 2005, had issues related to the aluminum heads and spark plug thread failure, but that was corrected in later designs. I have one in an F550, and my only complaint is that it puffs a little blue smoke at startup and started that as soon as 15000 miles.

It's not a diesel, but it's adequately torquey, holds up well and sounds pretty good .

I had an 07 e450 on a 32' C pulling a Jetta toad. Up extreme hills it would slow a chunk. Anything your find as interstate grade was fun other than at very high altitude. It would slow down, but it kept on going without issues. Never gave me grief other than doing service. It's a tight fit. But not a real issue if you get someone else to do the service.

Thanks everyone

Thanks, everyone, for your prompt and considered opinions about the Ford E450 V10 engine's reliability. These comments certainly assuaged my concerns about its towing and torque. We will be test driving the Envoy on Monday and, if all goes well, hope to close the deal.

Is there anything we should look for to ask the dealer to sweeten the deal? Does LaMesa RV negotiate prices like a car dealer or are the prices firm?

Our dealer gave new buyers a credit for RV supplies in their RV store. After we negotiated the price as low as we could, we told the salesman that we'd buy it at that price that day --- if they'd double our merchandise credit and add a slide topper to the single slide on an FK. The sales manager agreed. We were happy with our deal.

I hope your dealer is a good one. A large degree of your satisfaction will be your dealer's competence and integrity. Reading of some others on various RV forums really makes me appreciate ours.

Best of luck to you.

New owners!

Thanks to all the wonderful suggestions from members here. We bought the 2018 Jayco Envoy 100 and will pick it up on Wed., March 1. Can't wait for the shakedown cruise two weeks later (when the campground has a vacancy).

Toad

I learned that Toad is a nickname for a towed vehicle/utility trailer behind an RV. New language to learn.

It's a new lingo for me too.

TV is sometimes TV (Television) and some times Tow Vehicle - the puller.
Toad is the "pulled".

Congrats on your Envoy!
It's sooooooooo new it's not on the Jayco site yet!
