2014 Jayco Eagle Premier 361

Just wondering if anyone has had experience towing a 2014 Jayco 5er 361 weighing approx. 13,130 dry, hitch weight 2567 with a 2013 f250 6.7 diesel turbo CC short bed w/3.73 gears. Pros & cons. What about the weight?????

Get a dodge..you'll be happier in the long run. My son finally got rid of his 2014 Ford F-250 6.7. Lots problems.

Enforcer, my trailer isn't quite that heavy so I won't comment on how well it would do with your weight loads. Best bet is to take it to a CAT scale and weigh it up to see how you are set for loads. The 6.7 is strong and contrary to what others may have experienced, I've had zero problems with my 2013 F250 CC.

Your certainly on the edge. We looked at the 361 but opted to go with the 351 because we felt the 361 was even pushing the limit with our Ram 3500 srw. My guess is you will tow just fine but you definitely will have maxed out your hitch weight. Remember those numbers are "dry".

Your going to hear lots of opinions ranging from a Ford Ranger will tow it just fine to you need a Mini-Pete.

Best of luck and its a nice fifth wheel.

Your biggest issue will be payload capacity. Look at the door sticker and see what you have. My 2012 F-250 CC 6.7l has a payload capacity of 2400lbs. With that 5th wheel, I'd already be over payload by 157lbs with nothing else. In the real world, that pin weight from the factory will probably be 1 to 200lbs heavier. Once loaded, you're probably looking at 28 or 2900lbs on the pin and that includes no gear in your truck. IMO, too much weight for any 3/4 ton truck.

I have a 2014 Jayco 321 Premier and it weighs in about 2K less than your trailer. I have a 2002 F350 7.3L with a DP Tuner, AFC Intake, and a 4"turbo back exhaust. I brought my trailer back from Denver to Southern CA recently and you can feel the weight but no problem towing. I watched my pyrometer closely climbing hills but I now have the feel for when to downshift without watching it all the time. The only issue I can see with your truck may be the rear suspension. You may need to beef it up a bit with air bags or a little stiffer springs in the rear as TCNashville said 3/4 ton suspension is pushing it.

We pull our 351RLTS with the F350 and it does a nice job but we're a bit lighter than you will be since loaded we are just under 13K#. We are under the Rear GAWR by 490#. The attachment is a pic of my weight spreadsheet.

We purchased a 2015 Jayco 361REQS in June. Upgraded our TV from a GMC 2500HD D/A to a 3500HD D/A SRW primarily for the increased GVWR. The pin weight of the 361 put the 2500HD over its GVWR & RAWR.
Even with the 3500HD I'm very close to the GVWR. Our pin weight is over 3,000# loaded.

Your F250 will pull it fine, but also consider the stopping capability of your TV with that weight.

Best thing to do is to take your F250 to a scale and get it weighted, including front & rear axles. Then compare the weights to your GVWR & RAWR and you'll know exactly how much is left. I think you'll find that the 361 will put your F250 over its GVWR & RAWR.

We are pulling our 361REQS with a 2013 F350 diesel with no problems. Best towing rig I have had. The dealer said I would have needed air bags to tow this trailer with a F250. Dealer also didn't think I needed a slider in the short bed (6 3/4 feet) so I did not buy one. I am careful when backing but have never had the trailer dangerously close to the truck cab.

I too have the short bed to pull our 351RLTS and like you do not have a slider. My insurance spent about $500 repairing the rear window and cab. I discovered (the hard way) that while making a full-lock U-turn the front cap would contact the back of the cab. I am using a B&W OEM hitch that uses the Ford under-bed mounting.

Just a little question, and I don't have a premier. When folks talk about stopping the FW with a 3.4 ton, doesn't the FW have brakes as well and wouldn't that help in stopping the FW? A 1 ton truck isn't that much heavier or bigger than a 3.4 ton, so why the worry about stopping with a 3/4 ton compared to a 1 ton?

Good question! And, I'm sure there are valid answers either way. However, the way I always figured it, is that the truck is still "responsible" for stopping the weight in the truck bed. So if you have 3000# in the bed and your weight rating is at 2500#, the truck has to stop the additional 500# somehow. In my mind, that puts an extra strain on the truck. I can't explain the physics but can tell you that it's much easier for me to stop my 10,000# Jayco 5er (+/- 1800# payload) than my previous SOB 15,100# 5er (+/- 3000# payload) .

The only difference between a 2500HD and 3500HD GM is the rear spring pack. Helper springs or air bags help with additional loads on the 2500. I like the way the 2500 rides compared to the 3500 when not towing.
