2015 F250 6.2L with 28.5RSTS (Any Towing Issues?)

We are about to change our equipment. We are looking at purchasing a used 2015 F250 now and a new 28.5RSTS in the spring. The rear end on the truck is 3.73. Our trips are cross country and we cross the rockies on i90. We do not normally carry any water and 2 adults in the truck.

We already know from experience with our current setup that the F250 will be good in the plains but we are wondering it is sufficient for the rockies. I am hoping someone here will be able to share their experiences with a F250 6.2L and a HT trailer. I would like to know if you are redlining the truck to maintain a reasonable speed going up the rockies ? Reasonable speed as in 55mph.

And how about going down (engine braking and brake sizes on the F250) ?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Hi Bill,
I have a '13 F250 6.2 with a 27.5 RLTS. Towing in & around the Sierra of NorCal, I am really glad that I have the 4.30 gearset. Brakes work good along with the TH mode of the transmission.
I used to drive a 5.4/3.73 combo a few years back and that thing was a slug with my then tent trailer over the same routes. Prolly due to the engine more than the gear, but I was never happy with the rig towing anything more than my aluminum boat.

Same here: 6.0 diesel, 3.73's, OEM tire size, no problems.

Trans does down shift going uphill, but no redlining like a gas engine.
No exhaust brake, but my trans down shifts to assist downhill braking.

That's good to hear. Just purchased a 2017 f-250 Lariat 4x4 6.2 L with 3.73 gears. Plan on pulling our White Hawk 27DSRL into the Rockies on occasion.

We pull a 7000lbs (loaded) trailer through the Rockies on occasion. The truck does great but you won't be maintaining 55mph up some grades. We have the 6.2L and 3.73 rear end as well.
I don't think any of the current gas engines will maintain that speed pulling 9000+lbs so unless you go with a diesel you will have to be patient on a few hills.

And yes you have to let them rev! Once you get used to that the 6.2 will perform much better.

Cheers

Thanks to all who gave me some information. The truck is in my driveway now and next step is to replace my travel trailer with the Jayco Fifth wheel.

It's no problem that your 2015 will do it, just don't be afraid of the high rpm.

Maybe I'm reading wrong.
What is wrong with letting an engine run within its designed power band?
Sure, if you're holding 6k RPM for 30 minutes or so, you might be pushing it.
3.5 to 4k rpm with a late model engine? Based on my reading, some of y'all are doing that in town.
These new 6 and 8 speed transmissions aren't working that hard either.
I've never seen my transmission temp above normal unladen highway temps, even towing up inclines.
The auto industry has us covered. In spades.
Enjoy your trip and slow down and take in the scenery.

I know that when l'm towing my ram love the high RPM, it what it was made to do, I have a pretty long trip coming up this summer and can't wait to go.

We have a 2017 RSTS and tow it with a 2015 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.7 engine. Tows beautifully! No problems so far. Hardly feels like you're towing anything. Good luck!

I have a neighbor with the 6.2 and 3.73's and that thing is a pulling beast. It is on my short list of trucks to look at when it is time to replace my 1/2 ton. You should be fine pulling your rig. The HT Eagles are "designed to be pulled by a half ton truck" per Jayco. But it is very rare to find an actual half ton truck to meet the specs needed to pull them. Stepping to a 3/4 ton truck will make light work of the HT trailer.

The problem with the 6.2L is 6.7L Diesel envy.

Honestly, that trailer is not all that big. Your F250 will do just fine. Just look at all the people pulling monster 5ers with an F350.
