The reason I was going with a F150 was not only cost, but the F250 would not fit in the parking area where my wife works and it would be her daily driver.

I think many of us have fallen for this false payload thing (see my signature). Hats off to you checking and understanding this first.
My speculation, yes, it may well be "half ton" towable. Take a fairly stripped down F150 3 seater 4x2, no back seat, put the maximum tow/payload packages you can on it, and I bet it would tow it just fine, problem is not many people have that truck.
Fords site indicates you would be over 3200lbs payload as a matter of fact, thats right up there with my new Ram 2500 Crew cab gasser, might even slightly beat it.
Add on the supercrew and creature comforts however, you bring down your payload really quick. As others have said, its misleading, and I honestly wonder if many of the dealers (RV and Truck alike) really just don't understand this. When I was shopping for a 3/4 ton, most dealers had no idea the tire and loading information sticker with the remaining payload on the drivers door even existed. I even had 1 dealer tell me the payload was 10,000 Lbs (no, thats the GVWR, and no, I did not buy from there ;-) ) It would be really nice on trucks if they would put the available payload on each specific unit on the window stickers. They list every other silly thing on there like heated rear seats.
