If you can find an F150 with the HD package I would take that over an F250. The 150 has a much better chassis than the current Super Duty trucks.

I do believe that the last time I checked an actual Ford F150 brochure, the only F150 that had the max payload around 3000lb was a regular cab 2wd base model unit. (If memory serves... sometimes it does not . ) if your unloaded advertised pin weight is 1800lbs, I think your as delivered will be much higher and loaded will be more still. If you are going to hunt for a 150/1500 series truck be sure to look first at the yellow payload sticker regardless of who built it and hope it reads 2500lbs or more to leave room for cargo and family/pets. JMHO.

A 2015 F150 Super Crew 4x4 with the HD package has a payload of 2650lbs.

The reason I was going with a F150 was not only cost, but the F250 would not fit in the parking area where my wife works and it would be her daily driver.
I think many of us have fallen for this false payload thing (see my signature). Hats off to you checking and understanding this first.

My speculation, yes, it may well be "half ton" towable. Take a fairly stripped down F150 3 seater 4x2, no back seat, put the maximum tow/payload packages you can on it, and I bet it would tow it just fine, problem is not many people have that truck. Fords site indicates you would be over 3200lbs payload as a matter of fact, thats right up there with my new Ram 2500 Crew cab gasser, might even slightly beat it.

Add on the supercrew and creature comforts however, you bring down your payload really quick. As others have said, its misleading, and I honestly wonder if many of the dealers (RV and Truck alike) really just don't understand this. When I was shopping for a 3/4 ton, most dealers had no idea the tire and loading information sticker with the remaining payload on the drivers door even existed. I even had 1 dealer tell me the payload was 10,000 Lbs (no, thats the GVWR, and no, I did not buy from there ;-) ) It would be really nice on trucks if they would put the available payload on each specific unit on the window stickers. They list every other silly thing on there like heated rear seats.

Can't imagine towing a fifth wheel with any half ton truck. 3/4 ton minimum imo.

I use a sidewinder/revolution and it works well. Over 5009 miles towing 16500lbs this year and it works as advertised.

According to the 2016 Payload ratings, F150 with HD Payload package in a 4X4 Screw with 6.5 bed has 2660 lbs of payload (2650 lbs with the Ecoboost) or 2990 lbs in 2 wheel drive:

I am sure if you ask long enough, someone will tell you what you want to hear.

I've been working at a Ford dealer for almost 30 years now and I can tell you, I'd NEVER tow a 5er with a F150. That's just me. They ADVERTISE it can do the job, but you'd be disappointed. Trust me. Find yourself a used F250-F350.

I have to note, that I have been doing it for 3 seasons, to every coast (~12,000 mi), over many major mountain ranges, and have yet to be disappointed.
Yes, you do have to correctly size the fifth to the vehicle. And the OP's seems to be oversized. But to categorically reject the combination is a little too broad of a conclusion. It can work, and work well.
