30 amp to 50 amp
Hi
We go to a lot of places that only have 30 amp. If I get one of those 50 to 30 amp cords what won't work in the trailer?
Thanks in advance for the help

Everything will still work. You will just need to watch how much you turn on a one time. You should be OK with the micro, TV, lights and one a/c going, if you turn on the second a/c the circuit breaker on the post will probably trip.
The adapter connects both sides of the 50 amp to the 30 with a jumper internally.

This is a typical 50AMP Distribution layout.
You will need to have a RV 30A to 50A adapter that will look like this wiring diagram. Notice the part that accepts your 50AMP trailer shore power connector has the two hot legs shorted together so that both legs of your 50AMP Power Distribution Panel will be feed with the 30AMP source power.
Your trailer should work just fine but you will have to watch what is being turned on at the same time otherwise you will be tripping some breakers on the camp ground pedestal.

If the 30 amp and 20 amp circuits are different phases such a plug will immediately trip the breaker. I would like one that keeps each leg separate. You can test the wiring of an adapter with a multimeter.

I personally like to have an adapter that plugs into the trailers 50amp then use a 30 amp cord. Those 50amp cords are a monster to handle.once I get to my stay if they have 50 amp I will switch then.much easier when on the road

Clayton4971- A word of caution, if you're using all of your 50 amp equipment and pulling it through a 30 amp cable, it could overheat. Although, I suppose, if you're attached to the 30 amp outlet, you'll blow the breaker.

That's exactly what will happen done that already. We have been traveling for the last four years . We usually leave after turkey day or Christmas . Michigan to the SW half of the places have 50 amp . We have figured out what we can run at one time if not it lets you know . If I am going to stay a few days I will drag out the big cord but just for the night to sleep the 30 is so much lighter and easier to handle. The adapter that I purchased that plugs in the trailer from 50 to 30 I have used a lot. Four weeks and we will be hitting the road again.

You never ever want to use a 30 to 50 AMP adapter for your coach and then another 50 to 30 amp adapter to plug into the pedestal. It is a recipe for a fire. In that situation you would not be protected by a 50 amp breaker.

You are correct hopefully anyone that reads this will know . Thanks for posting. I couldn't imagine doing this. I have used the adapter that goes from fifty to thirty for several years now and it works great but to use two adapters would be like putting a penny behind a fuse in a old house .

You always are protected, either by the breaker on the post or the main breaker in the RV.

In the condition I mentioned the cord could overheat before the breaker tripped. If you use a 30 Amp cord by using a 50 to 30 adapter and then use a 30 to 50 adapter to plug the 30 amp cord into the 50 amp plug on the pedestal you are not protected against overloading the 30 amp cord.

I guess I'm not getting something. Why would you do this? Why not just plug into the 30 amp pedistal with the 30 amp cord? I must not be reading this right

The OP didn't want to carry around the larger 50 AMP extension cord due to weight and it being inflexible.

O.K. I get it now. His RV has a 50 amp service cord so he shouldn't go from a 50 to 30 amp connector then back to a 30 to 50 amp connector in order to plug into a 50 amp pedistal.

I'm with you on this.!! When we are traveling, only spending one night in a location. We always use the 30 amp cord. It takes a little power management unless I run the hot water heater on propane. I'm very conscious of our power consumption, so there has never been an issue with overload. When we are going to stay for extended period of time, we break out the monster cord(50 amp). That 50 amp cord is a beast used on a daily basis.
There is a mor/ryde device to handle the 50 amp cord but it takes up too much room in your storage compartment to suit me!!
