50 amp to 30 amp

Hey everyone. I just bought a 2016 eagle which has a 50 amp wiring but I have reservations for july 4 with only a 30 service cause that is what my old camper was. I know I cant run both acs but my fridge is on one leg and my converter on the other leg. does anyone know how the thirty amp to 50 amp converter plugs work. Do I need to cancel my reservations?

I believe you can probably use a 30 amp, but not be able to run two AC at the same time

You will be fine understanding the total connected load you can support will be limited. I also have a 50-amp rig but frequently use 30-amp connections when that is all there is.

50-amp connections are actually 50 amps per leg (potentially 100 total amps), 30-amp is only 30 amps. So you may have to alternate AC loads (microwave, electric water heater element, A/C, etc) to keep from popping the pedestal breaker.

30 amp will run your AC and microwave at the same time and I have been running both Ac's on 30 amp at the same time. Just turn one off when you run your microwave or toaster or coffee pot. Definitely keep your reservation and have a great time!

Thanks for the quick reply. Im assuming they are accomplishing this by taking the one hot leg from 30 amp service and using to supply power to both hot legs in camper with the plug?

You are correct, the converter plug runs the one 30amp input to both of the 50amp circuits in your rig.

Don't forget to run your water heater on propane while on the 30 amp service. When it comes on it will put you over the 30 amp limit and trip the pedestal breaker frequently if you have an a/c running plus other "stuff".

This is a diagram of the 30A to 50A long dogbone type ADAPTER. You can see the HOT connection of the 30A side feeds both HOT connections on the 50A side...

This will feed both Electric zones of your 50A trailer. Since you only have 30AMPS available to use you have to watch what you turn on as you may overload the source and trip its breaker. If you have a 240AVC Dryer setup in your trailer I would not turn it ON using this adapter setup.

We go to plenty of parks with only 30 amp service. Don't try to run both ac's at the same time, although some say you can. I have the 15,000 Btu in the main living room and 13,5000 btu in the bedroom and just don't need to run both at the same time. If running coffee pot and microwave on same circuit could blow the breaker. Just watch your use and you will be fine. I like to cook on an electric griddle outside so I just run a separate electrical cord to the extra outlets on the park electrical box. No problems what so ever. Enjoy your trip.!

We have a 25' Marinco 30 to 50 amp adaptor cord that we use most of the time, even when 50 amp service is available. It is SO much easier to handle than the supplied 50 amp cord. The only time we use the 50 amp cord is for extended stays and when it is necessary to run both ACs. You do have to be conscious of your amperage draw especially when running hair dryers, toasters, electric heaters, etc. We have been on 30 amps for the last month while running two heaters (one on low) almost continuously. We are running our water heater on gas and do shut off a heater when nuking and hair drying.

+1 I use the 30amp more than the 50 for the same reason. You will have to manage your power use and after a short time will learn what will run on 30amps, you be running out to reset the breaker while learning.
