Another Tire Question

We are replacing the tires on our 2015 Pinnacle FBTS. The current tires size we have is ST 235 80R16. We are looking to purchase G614 tires with metal valves, size ST 235 85R16. The tire dealership said these tires are about the best we can buy and should be fine on our existing wheels. Would like to ask the "experts" on this forum for your opinions.
Thank you!

Make sure your wheels can take 110 psi. Some wheels have the load capacity and PSI rating stamped on the inside of the rim. Jayco keeps the work order build for all of their rigs they assemble, so if the stamp is not clear they might be able to let you know if the wheels are rated for 110 PSI. Be sure to get high pressure valve stems.

I just put Gladiator QR35'S G rated tires on my 2011 Eagle 365 BHS. $786.00 out the door. Anyone else have these tires. Local tire dealer said the farmers love them on their stock trailers.

Size-wise, you'll have <1" difference. One thing with the GY tires, is that GY will repay you for damages due to a tire failure not related to a road hazard. Of course, you =pay= for this up front, with higher prices. There is a Sailun G tire that's getting good reviews and cost a lot less. You do lose the "insurance" that GY is (mostly) willing to give you as Sailun won't cover damages, though they cost a lot less.

I have been running those Goodyears for a few years and absolutely love them. Tires and brakes -- the two essentials for peace of mind!

Here is a Goodyear link on those tires plus it has a link to a chart on tire pressure as it relates to load capacity. I have found it most helpful. All tires must be inflated to the same pressure based on the tire that carries the heaviest load.

Your stock rims are not rated for 110 they are only rated at 80 psi.

I just bought a new 2015 Eagle FLQS with Ranier 235 80 16 tires. Am I to assume the rims on my new rig are also only rated to 80psi? They probably all come out of the same bin. I am also considering the G614's. Otherwise I will look to the Maxxis 8008. 17.5" wheels are not an option as I have 6 bolt, not 8 bolt axels.

I just got these for my Octane .They are a step up in load range to E. My stock tires were D range. I hope this doesnt mean my rims are only rated for 65 psi.

My friend has a 2014 Jayco Eagle Premier 375bhxx he just put G's on his camper and before installing talked to Jayco about the wheels. His wheels were rated at 110 psi from the factory. So before throwing out the classic your wheels are not rated for 110 psi be cautious. I want to also point out you can search rv forums and read about tire failure after tire failure on junk ST tires. Wheel failures are few and far in between. I went with the Gladiators because they are rated at 95 psi and have a 81 mph speed rating. I personally would not own a GoodYear after loosing 3 on a two year old unit within a month. Gy replaced all 5 tires and repaired my camper. One month ago I found my new GY'S failing again upon inspection. I would go with Saliun or Gladiator. Gladiator's are 14 ply steel belt with a steel belt side wall.

Hi bethcd.

Three things I would check and confirm for myself before making the switch.

1. PSI rating of the wheels - should be stamped on the inside of the rim.
2. Clearance - since the G614 are slightly larger in diameter, what impact will the increased size have with clearance with trailer and between tires.
3. Jayco warranty - since your sig indicates you have a 2015, I'm guessing it's still under Jayco's 2 yr warranty. Does changing tire size have any impact to Jayco's warranty. If Jayco says no impact - get it in writing.

Going with metal valves is an excellent and smart choose.

Note: IMO any tire may fail regardless of the manufacturer and there's no substitute for checking before every trip the tires for signs of cracks, etc. and maintaining proper tire pressure.

Hope this is of some help.

Here is my honest opinion. Go with the G's never look back. Anyone who leaves ST E rated tires on 7k axles is asking for a here is your sign award.

I just put the G614 tires on my Eagle Premier. My wheels are rated at 90 PSI according to Jayco. I could not find a PSI rating on my wheels, only a weight rating (3580 lbs). Recently I had the rig weighed getting individual wheel weights. The heaviest wheel was just under 3000 pounds with the fresh water tank full. According to Goodyear's inflation load chart I only need 80 psi in the tires. If I were to have 110 psi in the tires they would be overinflated. Call Jayco with your VIN and get your wheel rating, then get the rig weighed with individual wheel weights. If money is not an issue you can switch to 17.5 inch wheels and get the Goodyear G114. Clearance is not a problem as the G114 and G614 are nearly the same diameter.

Got the new Goodyear G614

As a follow up to my initial posting, as you will recall, after a few thousand miles on the Rainier tires, we had a large bubble. Replaced that tire under warranty and went directly (50 mile) to get the G1614's installed. One of the other tires that they pulled off the trailer had a 6 inch bubble and tear near the inside of the rim. So glad we stopped to get new tires when we did.
I called Jayco and found that our wheels are rated for 90PSI. Jayco said they do not recommend any change in tire size (80 to 85) but that we could do it if we choose. They also said the same about these tires. It does not effect the warranty. We put on the Goodyear G614 tires on the Pinnacle and then noticed that the tire was just a bit too close to the fender. So, we just shaved down the fender a little bit and now have good tires on our Pinnacle and got rid of the junk that Jayco installed. If you have these Rainier tires, I would recommend replacing them as soon as possible. Hopefully we have lots of safe miles in store on these new tires!

The wheel is a 16X6 8-6.5 aluminum split spoke wheel with a 0 offset. It is rated to 3580# at 80spi. These should be run at 80 psi. from Tredit tire the supplier to Jayco model #YF0366857T is the wheels they put on my 2015 31RETS,

Yet to read a single post about wheel failure but lots of post about tire failure. Now we have weight police and wheel air pressure police.

I've got a question about the Goodyear G614. Goodyear markets this as a trailer tire, but the tire size begins with "LT."

Can anybody reconcile this?

My wheels on my 36RSQS also gave only a weight capacity. My friend that runs one of the local Discount Tires said he could warranty the junky Goodyear Marathons that came on my rig ( all 4 where bad ) and then advised me to go with G rated 85's TaskMasters. I asked him about the rims, and he stated that they have installed hundreds of these on factory wheels with metal valve-stems and 110 psi and never had a wheel problem. I have had them about six months, 800 miles, and no problem to date. I spent the extra for balancing, road hazard, and the metal stems, all for around $800. We don't travel much, RV stays in a park most of the year, so not on the road a lot. My Discount Tire buddy also said that the reason their are so many failures with ST tires ( other than China made ), is that they get a totally different treatment than lets say passenger car tires. 1, they don't get the same type of heat cycles that your daily driver gets, they get worked hard, then they stay cold for sometimes months. He stated that protecting them from the sun, and the ground is also very important for the life of the tire. And of course, as in all tires, maintaining proper air pressure. Hopefully some of this helps.

I don't really care what tire, tire pressure, wheel, or wheel pressure you choose to use. If you feel for a few hundred bucks that your family, my family, your trailer and your vacation are worth risking, then go for it. The wheels are stamped at a max pressure for a reason. When a wheel fails due to over pressure (and the stress induced due to the increase in dynamic loading) it's not pretty.

With the big fifth wheels we all paid in excess of $50k so why not shell out a few bucks extra for a decent wheel/tire combo. In my case that was for the 17.5" upgrade (130 psi rated wheel) and the Good year G114 tire. The peace of mind is priceless.

Sure does make interesting reading on here. Seems like it depends on who you talk to at Jayco as to what answer you get. I just bought all new tires on my 2014 Eagle 33.5RETS. Nowhere on the rims was the tire pressure stamped. So we called Jayco. They would not or could not tell us and referred us to TBC, the distributor of a whole bunch of different tires. They could not or would not tell us the max inflation psi on the rims either. We wound up putting Gladiators back on the rig and got rid of the Towmasters. They are the same size, 10 ply, and run at 80 psi loaded. The tires on the dual axles are rated at 3,000 pounds each so that is 12,000 pounds. Our unit loaded only comes close to 10,000 so we should be good to go. That is static loading however and does not take into account running around curves, etc.
