Awning issue

I have a 2016 38FLSA and when I put out the awning it sounds like a freight train going down the tracks. It's seriously loud and sounds like it's going to rip off the side of the 5th wheel. I have had it at the dealer and they sprayed silicon spray in the tracks which helped out a little for the first couple of outings, but the noise is back and possibly louder.

I know my 2015 is noisy, but "loud as a freight train" seems unacceptable.

What's making the most noise?
The motor?
The gas struts?
Hinges in the support arms?

After it is extended, pull down on the support arms (procedure for dumping rain puddles). Is there any noise? from those parts.

Are the brackets firmly attached to the RV?

The noise appears to be coming from the tracks. Once extended it makes the noise every time it moves a 1/2" from the wind. It is annoying as hell. I sent the dealer an email to see if I could put axle grease in the tracks to see if that would stop it.

I wonder if one or both of the torsion springs are broken inside the tube? I would imagine they'd make a heck of a racket if they broke.

Or the awning isn't mounted square.

Chris, check for wear/binding at all of the hinge points.

Also check (with a helper) that the mounting rails have equal diagonal's.

Ours (38FLSA) does the exact same... makes loud noise when extending/retracting and noise like something is knocking on wall when the wind moves it... first time I heard noise from wind was in the middle of the night and I thought there was an animal dropping something on the roof, went outside with a flashlight and standing on picnic bench looking at roof, finally figured out it was the awning..

I have lubed the track and the little rollers on the end of arm with no luck or change in sound.. I'm thinking it may be coming from one of the scissor joints or where the gas strut attaches, I just haven't had a ladder handy to reach up to try and lube them..

I am currently at a campsite in Nashville and was putting out my awning and a gentleman came up to me and said I heard your awning making a loud squeaky noise. He also has a newer Jayco and told me that he had the same issue with his awning. So he took it into his local dealer and the dealer stated that it is a known issue and they fixed it. When I asked him what exactly they did he was unsure, but his awning doesn't make that terrible squeaking noise now and the dealer told him it was an easy fix. I have an appointment next Tuesday and will keep you posted.

Dubleosvn,

You should get his dealer info and we can call them to see what they did. I got s feeling that dealer doesn't knock w what they are doing based off my first visit for warranty work. It was a nightmare, must be hard to find good help these days. The guys weren't very smart to say the least. My problem is that they are the only Jayco dealership around me. 1.5 hours away from me. I live pretty much in Denton texas.

Same problem with both awnings on our unit too. I have tried numerous lubes to no avail. I noticed the small wheels on the lower arm do not turn but just drag along the inside of the rail causing the noise. I am also interested to hear what the fix is as it is VERY annoying!

Got an email from Carefree today and supposedly the problem is caused by the gas struts which have been "redesigned". I have asked them to send me new ones so I can replace them myself but have not heard back yet. Will keep ya'll up to date...

Finger lakes
Mine work fine no noise but a little jumpy when closing. So far trip is good. Six weeks at camp and just a few small things. Two water leaks, easy fix. My generator tripped one of its 30 amp breakers and I lost 110 to half the camper. Reset all the gfi breakers with no luck and figured major problem. Hooked up my Honda Jenny and all good so I new it had to be the house Jenny. Kitchen fantastic fan will not shut off when open and heater flame goes from yellow to nice blue flame randomly. So far I am very happy

Check how they have the 20amp and 30amp breaker on the genny hooked up. Mine did that and they had one of the wires to the breaker hooked up backwards. Swapped that and no issue.

My awnings are terribly loud. It's def. the struts and the force against the camper

Not sure if they changed anything for 2017 as far as awnings go, but mine is quiet going in and out. Seems to be holding up very well to wind/rain so now we leave it out during the week when we are not there. Do have a web cam so I can monitor from my phone. Had a couple storms roll by yesterday when we weren't there and it handled it well.

My FW Onan Jenney has two 30 amp breakers that is how I figured out when I hooked my Honda to shore power cord it was the Jenney. Doing some amp draw testing the fireplace and all kitchen slide power plugs along with the built in charger are all on the same circuit. I have no electric service at camp so the charger puts out max amps when genny is on for power. Moved coffee pot to island which is different power and solved problem

Pics of camp and awning tie down poles. Leave awning out angled all the time with no worries

The new struts have 85 lbs. of pressure and the originals have 150 lbs. of pressure. That should make a difference. I contacted Carefree with my ser.#'s of the awnings and they are send me new sets of struts for both awnings. Haven't got them on yet as we are away camping!
