Axle Stand Recommendation

I just bought a pro lift 12 ton bottle jack to use in the event of a flat tire on our 2016 Jayco Pinnacle FBTS. The bottle jack can extend up to 18 7/8 inches high. I plan on using 2X6 boards screwed together to get the fw high enough to change a tire.

First, will this work? Second, I know bottle jacks are just for jacking and I may need an axle stand to secure the fw after it is jacked up.

Does anyone have any thoughts on that? Any recommendations. I have never had to change a tire on a fw so I cannot pull anything from my experience.

Our pinnacle is 41' so some of the nice "trailer aid" gadgets won't work because of the distance between the axles.

You are not going to be jacking it up high enough to need a jack stand.
You just go high enough to get tire off the ground and a little higher when you put on spare tire.

Jack stands are great to have but back home in the garage.

Most carry enough 1.5 in. boards to clear the ground. Break the lug nuts on the flat tire after pulling the rig up on a few of the boards. Then put the bottle jack under the flats spring hanger or even where the axle is attached and jack it enough to clear the ground.

Remove the bad tire, install the new, then reverse the procedure. Tighten the lug nuts per the correct pattern in your owners and torque to recommended ft/lbs.

This is what I do when road service can't get there.

Thanks Jasum/ RobKelly. There was a warning on the bottle jack instructions that said the bottle jack wasn't meant to support weight but only to jack to height. The instructions said I would need a jack stand.

Is it safe to use only a bottle jack to change a tire on a fw?

If the rig is attached to the tow vehicle or properly chocked, yes.
I carry a 6 ton with me and have another at home that I can use to put it on jack stands if needed.
Do not crawl under it or comprise your position that would allow you to be injured if it did fall. Just common safety procedures.

That is very helpful. Thanks Norty1. Not having the experience, didn't want to take any risks.

A great thing to relieve any apprehension is to actually practice this in your yard. Much better than doing it for the first time on the side of a busy road.

BTW, if you have a flat on a busy road, slow down and get out of the traffic lane as soon as safely possible.

Appreciate a very complete answer. Thanks.

That is good advice. I will be sure to get some practice in.

When I had my brake problem and needed to check wheel rotation I just put my bottle jack under the axle as close to the backing plate with no problems. Plan on the same if I get a flat and have a big wait on roadside. By the time u get the spare use a breaker bar to losses all the lugs jack and change the tire road service will be there.

Yea, you are right. That is why I want to prepare to change a tire. We have road service but I don't want to get caught.

Jayco recommends jacking using the frame. You think the axle is Ok. It is closer to the ground and would be easier to lift I think.

Yup. U can even put a small 2x4 under the two u bolts and jack from there. To jack from the frame u will be lifting the trailer than spring and than tire

Thanks Rock. Yea, that makes sense. I give that a shot.
