Best Hitch for 2017 F150 5.5 box 2017 HT BHDS??

Sorry if this information has been covered elsewhere, but I've just purchased a 2017 Eagle HT BHDS and am planning on towing it with my 2017 Ford F150 Crew Cab 4X4 (EcoBoost) 5.5ft box (with Timbren SES's). The BHDS has a Revolution Pin Box so the dealer - and plenty of internet research - is suggesting that a standard (non-sliding) 5th wheel hitch is sufficient. However, I would REALLY like to hear from someone who actually has this setup because a friend is suggesting I will still need a slider for some tight spots (he bought a Demco Highjacker for his 2014 F150 5.5ft and 2017 HT BHOK).

Obviously I would tow 95% of the time in the forward position but is a slider advantageous for a newbie 5th wheeler like me when I get into tight spaces? Neither Reese nor Jayco were much help. Your thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Andrew

I have the same setup but 2016 and went with a Reese 30051 Sliding Hitch. This hitch has the rectangle bases and not the round tube ones. This allows me to slide the 5er back and do a full 90 degree plus jack knife and come no where near the cab of the truck. It also allows me to keep the tailgate on as the pin clears the box perfect when slid in the rear position.

Andrew, preference is the real answer here. My first FW I purchased a slider and never used it, but had the confidence that if I did need it, it was there. Short box, Long box will always be a topic of discussion but it boils down to how you, the driver, reacts and recon's where you are backing or taking your FW. Concerns with hitting the cab while backing is not eliminated totally just because you have a slider. It certainly helps but I will never admit to it being absolutely necessary. If backing your FW on un-even/extreme turf then the pitch of the FW nose is more a concern contacting the truck bed side than hitting the cab. I have a shot box RAM 2500 pulling a Pinnacle 37MDQS 40' 8" long non-slider. I always do a loop of the campground, scout out my site and then decide what I will need to do in order to back it correctly. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, if you want a slider, buy a slider. If you don't, then always recon and think ahead and you will be fine. Again, it's all about preparation and preference and most of all common sense. Happy Camping.

I have the Reese Revolution on my 2015 27.5 RLTS and love it. I have a short bed Ram and no problems with 90* turns. I highly recommend this setup. Sliders are heavy.

Sorry but I have to ask what the payload is on your F150? It will be stated on a sticker on your drivers side door jamb.

One other thing to mention is that people offering advice that have 3/4 or 1 ton short boxes are not dealing with the same setup. Short boxes for HD trucks are typically 6.5 feet and only 5.5 feet for half tons.

Cheers

Hmm...I'm interested in learning more, I wouldn't think an F150 has enough CCC to safely manage a 5'er.

They don't typically.

There are a few F150 with Max Tow and HD Payload options that might be capable of it but unless you have the HD payload option your payload would not be enough to carry the pin weight of the 5ers mentioned.

My 2016 F150 with 5.5 L Engine and 5.5 Ft box pull my Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS with no issues at all. When I ordered it I put all i needed as options am an good for 12,500 Lbs and my trailer is 8300 lbs. I never tow with water or anything in the tanks and even with DW and all my gear I am way under. 95% of my towing is also flat land so again no issues at all.

Just curious, but what is your CCC labeled as on the sticker?

I can't enlarge that...I thought typically the sticker is yellow and says something to the effect "Your cargo capacity as built is **** Lbs..."

Typically you run out of cargo capacity long before you run out of towing capacity.
Cargo capacity is the amount of weight you can carry without exceeding the trucks GVW

Good Luck... and if you sea e tag that says cargo capacity let us know how much it says...

That unit has a dry hitch weight of 1610 lbs...add in your hitch, passengers and any cargo in the truck, along with additional weight in the 5er and I would guess your going to be over what a half ton can carry...

Know that's not what you want to hear, but that's a lot of trailer for a not so heavy duty truck....

Good Luck..

So your trucks total cargo capacity is 1502 lbs. Your 5Dr pin weight dry is over 1600 lbs. With hitch, passenger's. Propane and a pillow you will be vastly over your trucks capacity. Looks like you will need a 3/4 ton minimum.. Sorry sure that's not what you wanted to hear. While you may be able to drag it down the road you won't be able to do it safely.

Goid luck. Your not the first one who's sale person told them sure you can tow with with any truck.

I'd bet your buddy with the RBOK is in worse shape than you. 1500lbs is pretty typical for a half ton especially when you get into highly optioned vehicles like a Lariat.

Your 5er tongue weight is probably much closer to 2000lbs loaded and ready to go add a few passengers and your truck is hauling 2400lbs easily. Definitely 3/4 to 1 ton territory.

There are a few half tons that come with close to 3000lbs of payload capacity but they are 2WD regular cab XL models with the HD payload package. Very rare.

Cheers

Like others have noted, the numbers are not in your favor here.

My last F150 had a similar payload rating. With full tank of gas and passengers, I had about 1,000lbs of available payload.

It looks like you have already purchased this trailer. If I was you and was dead set on towing with the half ton, i would first upgrade to LT truck tires and install airbags. Look into a b&w turnover gooseneck hitch with the Andersen 5th wheel hitch. That is the lightest 5th wheel hitch. Slider hitches are the heaviest and will only eat up more payload. All this will still leave you well overweight.

Better advice is a hd truck, or try to reconsider the trailer. IMHO

You need to check the Pullrite Superglide out. I have a 2012 Chevy 1500 Crewcab with the 5.3L engine and 5'8" bed. We had a 2012 Eagle HT 23.5 RBS. I upgraded to a 2016 28.5 RSTS. I have the Pullrite Superglide #3100 12k hitch. Everything is great on pulling my FW. I personally think you'll like what you see in the Pullrite system.
Happy hitch shopping.

There is no way in a million years I'd tow that with my 150, and mine has about 1900 lbs of cargo capacity.

Welcome to the club though, you'll probably be upgrading your truck soon. Like I did today lol. Sorry, I know it isn't funny, but you are learning the same lesson as sooo many before you. Whoever told you you could tow that trailer deserves a swift punch in the neck. If you can't take the hit on upgrading your truck, you'll want to explore getting a smaller camper. There's really no other option unless you are OK with being more than 20% over loaded on the highway. Even our die hard 'the 150 can tow it all' crowd is going to have a hard time suggesting that TV/Camper is a safe combination.

Best Hitch for 2017 F150 5.5 box 2017 HT BHDS??

so much for the "half ton" towable B.S!! So, if I understand correctly, with 1502 lbs max payload I would have to subtract 650 lbs for passengers and gear, then 250 lbs for the slider, and ultimately ending up with only 600 lbs or so of payload capacity? Is that correct? Because if the 5th pin is 1800 lbs (loaded), what HT in the world could hold that much payload? Thoughts?
